I have been working at York County Government full-time

    Pros

People. Still has a pension plan.

    Cons

Low pay. High turnover. Health benefits are no longer a bonus for working there. They're on par with every other private company with high deductible plans.

    Advice to Management

Concentrate on long term employee retention.

I worked at York County Government full-time

    Pros

Great job, very fulfilling to work as a 911 Dispatcher. Good paid training program. Good benefits.

    Cons

Very poor support from management. They do not show any care for the dispatchers or listen to concerns or ideas the dispatchers may have.

    Advice to Management

Be more concerned about your employees. Listen to what they have to say and try to work with them.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at York County Government full-time

    Pros

The health insurance cost was reasonable and the retirement benefits are potentially solid if you stay there long enough.

    Cons

The salary for most jobs is laughably low. I left for a 5 digit increase to do that same work elsewhere. It's also a very negative and unpleasant environment with many people across many of the offices that make up York County Government openly complaining and sharing their general unhappiness with working there. There are some very nice and good people, but unfortunately the place is also peppered with egotistical and arrogant people who dramatically increase the work stress and decrease the satisfaction that one can get from their job. The turnover rate is quite high in many departments.

York City, particularly downtown where York County Government offices are located has a lot of unpleasant characters on the street, crime, and is not the safest place to be. You have to pay for parking either by getting on a 1-2 year waiting list for the cheaper county lots or paying $45+ per month to park in a littered, dangerous looking city parking lot if you don't want to take your chances parking on the street in the nearby crime ridden, dilapidated neighborhoods.

Anyone who works in York is subject to the city taxes even if they don't live there because the city has been in a dire financial situation for some time. For me this ate up a good fraction of the of the tiny 1.6% annual raise I received.

You are not given your vacation time in a lump sum at the start of the financial year, rather you have to accumulate it slowly, a few hours per month. This means it can take almost half a year before you accumulate a full week of your vacation time. This makes it difficult to plan vacations because you have to think far in advance and your time off plans can be wrecked if you've saved 5 days for a vacation but then suddenly need to use one of those day for something that comes up.

The county also doesn't offer benefits when you first start, originally making you wait 90 days for your benefits to start. That was until the Affordable Care Act came into effect and set a max limit of 60 days within which employers had to begin health insurance benefits.

    Advice to Management

Arrogance and egotism is not leadership and will really make talented hard working people who want to make a difference and want just a little respect search for opportunities elsewhere. In an organization with pay as low as York County the environment really needs to be much better to make staying there more tolerable.

    Pros

Pay is great for this area and so are the benefits of pension.

    Cons

They let anyone work here. Friends and family based

    Advice to Management

They need to experience what we do on a daily basis.

    Pros

A wonderful job to have helping citizens and emergency workers.

    Cons

No understanding of work related stress or personal time. You have no personal life when working there so not good for candidates with a family.

    Pros

There is always opportunities for advancement. It is a good organization to work for. Once you are in you can go anywhere plus if you decide to transfer to a state or federal job your retirement transfers over for years in.

    Cons

Sometimes employees can get into your business but just don't tell anything you don't mind them knowing.
