I have been working at York University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pays well for the amount of time you spend teaching. Getting to know and work with your students is enjoyable, and other ta's and professors are usually very helpful if you are a new ta.

    Cons

You may be nervous on your first class but it gets better. In the beginning there is a lot of prep work, especially for classes you haven't taught before. But by the second or third time around it becomes super easy. Sometimes you have to invigilate mid terms or exams on weekends, and they are boring.

    Advice to Management

The credit system (pay rate) for how much courses are worth teaching is a bit skewed. Some courses are worth more credits such as bio 1000 and 1001 whereas others are worth less.

I worked at York University as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, excellent staff/faculty/professors to work with, good hours, excellent pay

If you get a great professor to work with it can make a huge difference on your experience

    Cons

    - the new funding model only allows graduate students (Masters) to work a .5 contract so you can only work for one semester
    - the offices provided to TA's are shared and have strict rules and guidelines that can make it a little frustrating

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Unionized and good health insurance coverage even for international students. Campus style working environment (obviously) so no suits required.

    Cons

People working in payroll and health insurance department were rude and sometimes unreasonably suspicious of me of trying to scam them when I applied for benefits (YMMV). Ineffective negotiation tactics with union that resulted in long strikes (twice within 10 years).

    Advice to Management

Don't just walk into the negotiation room and scream no. Every time people go on strike you cave, so show some initiative and avoid the strike next time.
