I have been working at Young Invincibles full-time

    Pros

The opportunity to learn and grow as a leader is unique for a Millennial professional. The senior leadership works tirelessly to support and empower their staff, most of whom are peers themselves. The commitment and dedication to mission and content of the work is tremendous and inspiring.

    Cons

There is sometimes a start-up feel in how we operate, which I was unprepared for. However, I have learned to become more adaptive, patient, and willing to roll up my sleeves to continue to build and strengthen the organization.

    Advice to Management

    Stay focused on making impact.

I worked at Young Invincibles full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great team of young adults to work with who came in with a great deal of passion and experience for the various program areas
Great experience networking with other organizations

    Cons

POOR Management. The management does not know how to take feedback or value the opinions of their staff. Deliverables where not well thought out by directors / managers or well communicated. Management has very little experience on how to work with staff. Poor HR system , no HR manager.
Grant chasers- it was more important for YI to get grants and brand their name then actually facilitate good work with marginalized communities

    Advice to Management

Learn to take feedback, stop taking grants for smaller communities that can use the money and actually produce change.

I have been working at Young Invincibles (Less than a year)

    Pros

    -Experience in progressive politics
    -Experience forming policy platform

    Cons

-Utilize a top-down approach instead of a lower-archy type of approach that promotes more buy in from staff and community

    Pros

Get to work on important issues with dedicated, smart, young staff.

    Cons

There were a lot of growing pains during this time. Management often bit off more than they could chew, which made it hard to deliver on promises we made to funders.

I have been working at Young Invincibles (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - overall nice group of people
    - depending on the role it could have its perks
    - good location
    - very inclusive

    Cons

    - overall management is terrible. They need a senior staff member with minimum 10 years experience to run the entire organization. The lack of experience at the management level definitely shows.
    - management asks for ideas but if it falls outside of what they already want to do, then the chances of using your idea is slim.
-Some of the regional offices aren't actually offices and the way they go about opening them is all wrong. I don't know how accountants are approving this.
    - there is a lot of dead weight within the organization which brings down other employees. Mind boggling how staff haven't been fired, which ties back into the lack of experienced management.
    - as of now, there is no HR team and there's a high turnover rate.
    - the finance team drags their feet on every single thing which is strange because they also have accounts.
    - they over promise to funders then pressure staff to meet those promises
    - due to the lack of experience at the management level, there are very few managers whom you can learn from.
    - LIMITED funding for professional development and no real perk to working here other than helping 18-34 y/o
    - A LOT of the programming is ambiguous

    Advice to Management

    - Hire a senior staff member with EXPERIENCE to run the organization. This may go against the 18-34 population served, but the management is missing.
    - GET RID OF DEAD WEIGHT
    - Hire more qualified staff

I worked at Young Invincibles full-time

    Pros

Fellow colleagues, decent event invitations, casual working environment, very smart people working around you, learning to work your butt off so that you can take your skills somewhere else where they are more appreciated.

    Cons

No idea how to manage people, no clue how to get rid of dead weight, stubborn management with an unrealistic view of self, no connection between DC and regional offices, horrible work-life balance, terrible salary offerings.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees more. Fire the person who manages your funds.
