I worked at Younkers part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I loved working at my Younkers location. Each location was different but as a department we worked together instead of competing against each other. Was a bit slow sometimes at my location, but overall was pretty consistent. Loved earning commission because you always earned more than just your hourly pay.

    Cons

    Pushing credit card on customers

I have been working at Younkers full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The discount; 20-25% depending on how long you've worked there.

    Cons

HORRIBlE pay! Management is lacking greatly! The store manager has been known to scream until literally red in the face and threaten employees at morning meetings for not opening enough store credit cards. They plaster lists all over the walls of every employees numbers, pointing out "zero producers". This is all meant to embarrass into "trying harder". Managers talk about employees to other employees, yet never addressing the problem directly. There is no sense of leadership from any of the managers, and absolutely no appreciation for any of the employees. It is a hostile work environment. This is why so many people hire in, work a week or two, and then never come back. Severely understaffed, which means getting the breaks employees are entitled to is rare.

I have been working at Younkers full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The clientele that I have the good fortune of working with.

    Cons

The constant pursuit of opening a company credit card. It feels like we are there to open credit cards and while we are at it, sell some cosmetics.

    Pros

You get to know your fellow Sales Associates, and if you're working with good people, you make good friends. Some of the managers are amazing -- they get to know you and you can joke around with them and while it's still pretty professional, you can become pretty good friends with the managers too.

    Cons

Number one complaint from customers and associates would be the coupons. There are so many exclusions that trying to use the coupons usually isn't worth the time you spend trying to figure out the coupons. Customers get frustrated and tend to take it out on you. This is retail, you have to build a thick skin. My biggest complaint is that all the hiring ads list "competitive pay" as a perk for working at Younkers. When I started, at age 18, the minimum wage in my state was $7.50, and they offered me $8.25. As the state minimum wage rose, my wage stayed the same. After one year, I received at fifteen cent raise and was told I would get a bigger raise if I got more customers to open store credit cards. The next summer, I received a ten cent raise, but only received it because, without that raise, I would've been making less than the state minimum wage of $8.50.

I have been working at Younkers part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I've worked at two locations, and I've always loved my coworkers. My department managers have always been competent and friendly. You start at a discount of 20%, then after a year jump to 25%. You learn a lot of customer service because of difficult customers and coupons. At the first location, they scheduled well and you always had someone there with you. Days are easy to get off of you ask 28 days in advanced.

    Cons

They push insanely hard for you to open credit cards, which have an extremely high interest rate. At the second location I worked with, they schedule you for 7 hour shifts completely by yourself so you can't take a break. Also that location has the worst store manager I've ever met, who regularly tries to intimidate you into doing extra work or staying late. The other department managers at that location often come into my department to tell me what to do, even through they don't know how my department works. At both locations, management would do anything to make the customer happy, including breaking store policy and then lecturing you for following it. The customers are also awful, especially when it comes to the coupons. You have to have thick skin to deal with them. Hours vary week to week. I may be scheduled for 10 one week and 27 the next. The store stays open late during holidays and sales, even through there aren't customers shopping. Also, one of the locations had no security at all, so sales associates are expected to stop shoplifters, even through that's not in the job description when you get hired. Safety regulations are only followed on the day the insurance company comes for an inspection.
