I worked at Zales full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I enjoyed working with the public, helping customers find great gifts for themselves, friends and family. I liked learning about different kinds of gemstones and diamonds.

    Cons

Too much emphasis on pushing the company credit card. Almost no chance of advancement unless you completed 5 areas each month, and credit was usually everyone's downfall.

    Advice to Management

If you plan on closing a store, you might want to give your employees more than 5 days notice that they'll be out of a job. I understand you think your employees might steal or not show up for work if they get too advanced a notice, but it's totally disrespectful to your employees to drop that kind of bomb on them.

    Pros

Good benefits and good comraderie amongst staff.

    Cons

Salary not competitive and there was a lot of fear looking of pending layoffs after acquisition from Signet.

I worked at Zales (Less than a year)

    Pros

More than willing to train, very educational, an excellent base knowledge of jewelry.

    Cons

I had 2 managers while I was there-one was fired for essentially misconduct, and the other thought it was acceptable to yell at (not unreasonable) customers while the floor was busy.

    Advice to Management

Seniority and experience are not always a good reason to keep a manager circulating

I worked at Zales full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Old management was easy to work with and supportive; A lot of time to get to know your sales team members; Can be enjoyable if you have a good team dynamic; Working with jewelry is enjoyable if that is something you are interested in -- I had a great team of coworkers during my time with the company. This and showing the jewelry, which I enjoyed, are the only reasons I am giving 3 stars...otherwise I would have given only 1 1/2

    Cons

New (read: current) upper management is rude and condescending; Untrustworthy company (customers KNOW this, so store traffic can be VERY slow); Unreasonable sales goals w/ only marketing help from upper management being mandatory cold calls every day inviting customers to come see us; Immense pressure from the company/management to trick those who cannot afford the jewelry into signing up for the company credit card; Security concerns of working in a mall (upper management only cares if the store is robbed; personal employee safety concerns are not a concern for them); VERY limited career growth opportunities; No time off, and working most during holidays; Cleaning customers' NASTY jewelry (rings that haven't been taken off in years, crusty/gooey earrings straight from the ear into your palm, etc.); Constantly cleaning glass jewelry cases; Difficult special order system to navigate for custom work; Repairs often come back unsatisfactorily, and you must explain to the customers why it took 2+ weeks for their precious jewelry to be fixed, but it wasn't done properly, so has to go out to the same people for another 2+ weeks in hopes it will be better; Generally repair system is terrible and causes many customer complaints; I could go on...

    Advice to Management

Respect your employees; Assist in promotional marketing to get customers in the doors (i.e. getting stores that have reopened or newly opened on Google/in mall directories (!!!) , grand opening events, seasonal decorations, less in-store signage/more radio and TV ads); Revamp inventory (most designs are uninspired and out of date); Distribute company-provided materials in timely manner (name tags, business cards, contact books); DON'T SWITCH DIAMONDS

    Pros

Meet some amazing co-workers, flexible scheduling, base pay plus commission with increases available

    Cons

With the recent acquisition by Signet jewelers, more pressure was put on the Zales brand and sales metrics became harder and harder to obtain, workplace environment quality really depends on personality of Store Manager

    Advice to Management

the lack of positive criticism is disheartening, upper management doesn't seem to care how well you're performing unless you are not meeting metrics month to month
