I worked at Zero Motorcycles full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Some of the most intelligent and talented EV engineers you could ever hope to work with.

    Cons

Soul-crushing work demands and no understanding or recognition of accomplishments by upper management

    Advice to Management

Understand you have lost most of your original engineering talent. Understand why people would leave what should be the most exciting and dynamic workplace possible. You cannot move forward until you understand why you have massive employee turnover and accept responsibility for you part in this. INVUS and Abe Akenazi, the buck stops with you.

I worked at Zero Motorcycles full-time

    Pros

Forward thinking, passionate, driven (no pun intended) and exciting technology to work with. The teams are collaborative and news, successes and guidance is transparent.

    Cons

The culture is a bit hard to wrap your arms around. There is a lot of management turnover and it seems that the investors have a stronger hand in the direction of the company than the executive management team.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the pace, keep the company moving forward and build a business plan that is believable, obtainable, and works well within the resource structure This technology is needed in the industry and the world. It would be a shame to see ten years of hard work fizzle.

I worked at Zero Motorcycles for less than a year

    Pros

Excellent executive management. Design teams and production work closely to deliver the best bike in the industry. Sales and marketing driving their global sales expansion through top tier dealerships.

    Cons

Some headwinds due to being first to market with a full line of EV Motorcycles.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course as you drive acceptance of EV technology vs. ICE (Internal Combustion Engine)

    Pros

The people that work there are very great, smart, and fun. You will continue to learn and provide for the company. Not too big of a company but great place to work.

    Cons

Not that great of benefits or opportunities as an employee unless you work there for a long time.

I have been working at Zero Motorcycles full-time

    Pros

If you works at Zero it is because you love motorcycles and cutting edge technology. Everyone that works there wants to be there and you can tell. It's a great environment with tons of talent and amazing people. It's a startup with a limited budget, but that doesn't stop them from trying out new ideas. It's amazing how fast the product and company is growing and learning from its experiences. It's located in... Scotts Valley!!

    Cons

It's a start up and there is no guarantee. Big risks big rewards.

I worked at Zero Motorcycles full-time

    Pros

A company with ambitious goals that stands to revolutionize the two-wheel industry leads to a very exciting working environment. The team is passionate about the mission and draws from an eclectic mix of backgrounds (two-wheels, tech, action sports, greenies, entrepreneurs). Both a pro and a con, the company is young and still searching for its market. Plans are changed and modified as learnings and experience... are gathered, which leads to a stronger company but employees should have a willingness to make adjustments. The company is growing, so each year brings new challenges and opportunities on nearly all fronts (sales, marketing, product, manufacturing). This keeps things interesting and lends itself to employees who enjoy challenges, even if it means long, taxing days, as opposed to employees who enjoy routine and defined schedules.

    Cons

At times the company misses out on one of its potential strengths of being young, small and nimble and instead functions as if it's a company several times its size. There is also a mild preference of following the conventional path taken by other players in the motorcycling world. While relatively standard, each of the departments can have a different flavor depending on the characteristics of the functional... head. Candidates should make sure they get a sense of the department environment they are considering joining and quality time with the leader to determine the strength of fit. The engineering and operations teams can be at odds with each other, although this has improved tremendously as the company, its products and processes have matured.

    Advice to Management

Ensure efforts are only spent on activities that are most valuable for advancing the company. Limit meeting frequency and size. Keep an entrepreneurial and open mindset when planning the business.

I have been working at Zero Motorcycles full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Santa Cruz based employees. Work hard, play hard. Good location. Non-Management employees are very solid.

    Cons

Very typical start-up Management concerns. Very short term view and decision making, thus the same mistakes are made over and over. Tremendous money pressures. Horrible supplier base. Management turn over is high. Dis-connect between most departments. Major ethical issues behind the scenes, which is why I left. FYI, all (2) Management levels above myself have been removed/changed since I chose to leave.
