I worked at Ziff Davis full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great, really smart people; casual work environment, jovial but professional atmosphere; decent benefits. My coworkers were what got me excited to go to work everyday.

    Cons

Writers have strict quotas, little room for creativity. Upper management isn't focused on quality of product and there's little communication between departments and few opportunities to collaborate. Ziff is focused on gobbling up smaller companies, but the acquisitions don't see themselves as being part of the company. Lack of transparency with management; managers are rarely trained to be managers, and are often ineffective.

    Advice to Management

Create more opportunities for departments to get to know each other.

Benefits aren't as good as the competition.

    Pros

Smart people. A wealth of knowledge of the digital publishing & data business can be learned from everyone at every level.

    Cons

Management skills are seriously lacking. A clear growth structure for employees needs to be set as well. Start up culture for a mature business.

    Advice to Management

Could use some learning & development programs for management.

    Pros

There are a lot of good people that work at Ziff Davis.
    They also have good benefits

    Cons

Management was unwilling to listen to lower level employees. I was always spoke down to.
Had to work long hours in the NY office.

    Advice to Management

Don't have such a short leash with employees. Provide them the resources to do their job well.

I worked at Ziff Davis (More than a year)

    Pros

Good people. Smart, experienced. Flexible work rules. Good visibility for a freelancer. High-quality product, originally in print, now mostly online.

    Cons

Haven't really updated the way they work or do business. Don't communicate well with employees. No clear vision of what the company is about, or at least not one that is well-articulated.

    Advice to Management

Leverage your multiple properties and deep bench of talent into modern platforms, as other, much newer ventures continue to pass you by and eventually draw away the best talent.

I have been working at Ziff Davis full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good product. You can be proud of the editorial integrity and the quality of what the various websites produce. C-level is strong and the company has been on a financial upswing and is growing through acquisition rapidly.

    Cons

It's been falling behind the times for the last year. There is a distinct lack of desire to innovate that has appeared recently which is making it difficult to bring new ideas to the table.

Company culture has become muddled due to multiple fast pace acquisitions.

    Advice to Management

Quit shutting people down before you even try to execute an idea. Go back to some of the cultural principles that created a once very positive workplace.

    Pros

Fellow co-workers, great marketing team, great work/balance.

    Cons

Declining readership, but that was turning around due to acquisitions.

    Advice to Management

I think you're doing a great job, keep it up!
