Best place to work at 2022

May 31, 2022 - Business Development Representative in New Orleans, LA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

The company provides amazing work culture, amazing benefits and fantastic career development. They also provide fully remote and hybrid schedules, depending on what works best for the employee. The company truly values work-life balance and they ensure you are taken care of!

    Cons

I haven't found a con yet, and that says a lot because most jobs either fail in one or more of the categories I mentioned in the pros, plus management typically sucks at most places. Not at Zillow though. Everyone is so caring, helpful and supportive and everyone strives to make sure everyone on the team performs well and help when ever assistance is required.

    Good people, messy culture

Nov 26, 2022 - Senior Counsel in Seattle, WA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

Zillow has some of the smartest, most caring, and creative thinking people I have ever met. Their Chief People Officer and the majority of their executives are wonderful to work with, and the vast majority of peers are kind, intelligent, and thoughtful.

    Cons

Zillow is stuck. I'm not sure if the acquisition strategy, the attempt to enter traditional real estate, or bureaucracy is to blame, but despite having all the right pieces and people, Zillow is rowing in circles. The polite culture has been infected by politically minded people using superficial metrics and being loud to move up in the company over more qualified, better employees. People have started being punished for pointing out problems, and are encouraged to gloss over mistakes and avoid big swings. Resources are conservatively allocated, so people start to in-fight and manipulate in order to avoid being understaffed. Compensation is extremely low compared to even earlier stage companies. Using the right language and virtue-signaling is prioritized over efforts to actually increase representation and inclusion. It breaks my heart to see a company filled with so many wonderful people have no clear path forward.

Community
Housing affordability is a crisis in communities across the country. The typical monthly rent in the U.S. is over $2,000 a month nationally, which is 37% higher than five years ago. Sharp increases in rent have a direct impact on rates of homelessness and are considered by policymakers to be a primary cause of housing instability. Zillow was founded on 'Turning on the Lights' for people navigating a complex and often difficult journey when trying to find a home. Our technology has helped achieve that in real estate and we want to offer this expertise for those facing the challenge of finding a way out of homelessness. Housing Connector is a direct outcome of bringing these pieces together, which has 'Turned on the Lights' for people that had been experiencing homelessness and now have an affordable place to call home. #TechnologyforGood Read about Charlie's story.

Diversity and Inclusion
Zillow is proud of our continued sponsorship of AfroTech, one of the largest Black tech conferences in the country. At this year's conference, which was held Nov. 13-17, we hosted both an intimate reception for executives and an after-party for all attendees. Our delegation included members of Zillow’s Recruiting and Equity & Belonging teams, Billow (our Black employee affinity group) and some of Zillow’s senior executives, who joined together to build community and connection with some of the most talented folks in our industry. Attending AfroTech is an intentional effort to ensure that we invite talent from this brilliant community to join us on our mission of making home more accessible to all people through innovation and products. Read more about Zillow's AfroTech 2022 experience and our focus on equity & belonging from our Vice President of Recruiting, Roz Francuz-Harris.
