I worked at Zipcar full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Many job perks, experience working with customer accounts/financing responsibilities, culture code/hr, availability of personal development, experience working with software engineers creating groundbreaking technology to help the Zipcar experience

    Cons

Weekend hours were required. Unclear communication as far as pay increase, pressure to be one of the crowd and fit in, communication could be worked on

I worked at Zipcar full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people. Great culture. Loved working there. Everyone very collaborative. A place I worked where even though I left I remain friends with many of the people I met there.

    Cons

Not sure how much they changed once they were bought by a larger car rental company. I was worried it may change the culture

    Advice to Management

Make sure you stick with what made Zipcar great in the first place. Never change the culture. You will do great things.

I worked at Zipcar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

My colleagues were smart and innovative. It was hip and fun and people were always interested in hearing about it.

    Cons

Compensation was confusing and changed frequently. Senior management rarely listened to those dealing with customers so executive decisions were often misguided.

    Advice to Management

Management has changed since I worked there as it was bought by Avis. My former colleagues tell me that it is not the fun, hip company it used to be. It is now just another rental car company. Advice would be to go back to Zipcar's roots and put some former employees in more senior roles. They have the history and know what they are doing. Also, bring back the fun cars.

I worked at Zipcar as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The work environment is comfortable and the team culture is very close nit.

    Cons

The software is not as young as the rest of the company. Zipcar started in 2000 and the codebase hasn't aged as well as it could have. But then again, does it anywhere?

    Advice to Management

Focus more on treating the engineering team as an asset rather than a requirement.

Better than most companies I worked for, Zipcar is place where you can add value.

    Cons

Pay and Benefits could be better.

I have been working at Zipcar full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Smart, laid-back, but hard-working people. Family atmosphere. Recent corporate acquisition has created a lot of opportunities for growth.

    Cons

A slightly ossified culture that is finally becoming more dynamic, but some of the effects still linger.

    Advice to Management

Put your people first. At all times. Innovation is stifled without the proper level of communication and transparency.

    I worked at Zipcar full-time

    Pros

    Great co-workers
    Laid back atmosphere
    Co-workers believe in the product

    Cons

    Out of touch management
Lack of communication between management and employees
    Lack of benefits
    Low pay

    Advice to Management

Get more in touch with your employees and fix the communication between corporate and local offices - the ball gets dropped somewhere along the way. Realize the amount of work your employees do for the little pay they receive. The reason they do this work for terrible pay & benefits is because the majority of them believe in the company and what the model stands for.

I have been working at Zipcar full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Coworkers are awesome. Product / service is very cool and interesting.

    Cons

Lots of weird stuff, like we never have enough paper towels. Executives seem to set direction according to whim.

    Advice to Management

Get to know your employees and learn to relate to them as people. Stop chasing the new bright and shiny thing and give us some time to fix things that are broken or make known improvements.

I worked at Zipcar as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great concept, fun environment, interesting people, good location, beer on Fridays.

    Cons

Hard to understand the business model and how Zipcar will earn meaningful profits, employees too much spread around due to limited space

    Advice to Management

Share longer term plans so you know where the company is heading. Just look like the cost continues to be very high compared to the revenue coming in.
