Management Vision and Leadership issues unfortunately especially in product
Aug 27, 2018 - Anonymous Employee in Seattle, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The company continues to grow and does have potential. Good work life balance . HR team that supports the team is great and tries their best to keep the negative events behind them and strives to make the company better. There are some really talented non executive managers and honestly the nicest folks you can work with/for at Zonar. They look after their teams and motivate and mentor.
Cons
Unfortunately cannot say that about the executive leadership. They have just risen in titles and not looked at realizing the company vision.

Big company stability, startup-like opportunity, pain from both
Dec 20, 2018 - Software Development Engineer III in Seattle, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Overall / Culture: - Solid, stable company with a strong foothold in the industry - they aren't going anywhere - Good benefits - Awesome parties, very social office atmosphere - Generally some sort of catered event once every week or two - Great work/life balance Technology Org Specific: - Using great tech: GCP, Kubernetes, Kafka, Gitlab CI/CD, and more - Very willing to adopt new technology - Merit-based promotion path, meaning the right people get promoted - Software org is growing rapidly, meaning lots of opportunity for growth - Learning opportunities abound - Strong development leadership and mentoring
Cons
Senior Leadership has too many priorities and TODOs without a clear focus or cohesive vision. This can make it difficult to focus on building quality software.

Stagnant Industry, golden age of telematics is over. Continental ownership changed everything.

Good work/life balance Fun events Nice People
Cons
After being purchased by Continental, the entire company culture eroded. The golden age of telematics is long gone, now it's just a constant battle of fighting to take clients from competitors, not any greenspace left in the market.

Scattered, nepotistic, and out of touch
Aug 6, 2021 - Software Developer in Seattle, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Brilliant coworkers in engineering. Some transparency from senior leadership. Ok work life balance
Cons
Mid level management was deceptive, out of touch, and in some instances incompetent. Promotions and raises are reserved only of the “in group” rather than merit based. Refusal to try new ideas. Horrible interdepartmental communication. Pay is sub par for the Seattle area. CEO seems checked out - more interested in schmoozing with Continental (the parent company) than running Zonar. Constant impossible deadlines. Good work is reported upward as a great “team effort” mistakes are reported upward as individual fault. My mental health has improved dramatically since leaving.

Great people, cool product...... thats it
Jun 4, 2014 - Anonymous Employee in Tukwila, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The people that work next to you are really great. Smart people with the drive to do awesome things. When you leave zonar, you are able to go do just about any job in your field, making 50%+ more than before because of the experience you gain working there.
Cons
work life balance is a joke. the leadership team tells the software team that they are lucky to have jobs, because the economy is terrible and they should be happy they have the PRIVILEGE of working at zonar. The compensation is really a joke, I started out relatively new in the technology field, but when I left zonar I had a job in less than a week making 50% more. I had never bothered to look around while I was with zonar, because I actually believed that I was lucky to be employed. Personal favorites, and vendettas abound within the management structure. low level managers are let go when they cant perform to the standards the higher management demands... even if those levels are completely unreasonable. There is an unwritten rule that if you (as an employee) are only working 8 hours a day, you are not working hard enough, and they will find someone else who will do the work.

Horrible work life balance, unfair promoting
Dec 8, 2020 - Accounts Receivable Specialist in Tukwila, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Good benefits, fun non work related activities
Cons
Zero work life balance. They do not care what is going on in your personal life, and it better not get in the way of work. The management team overall is a joke, especially in finance. They would have meetings to improve the moral of the employees but nothing actually ever came of it. They don't treat all employees equally either. One employee will ask for something such as a promotion and be told thats not possible due to budgets and its only done at review time but two weeks later a new position is created and their coworker given a promotion, by the same manager. The people who get promoted are because they are friends with the management team and not because its earned with merit or skill.

Good people hamstrung by bad management
Dec 12, 2017 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Work/life balance Good people on the ground.
Cons
My former manager managed out all the women on his team. Some were transferred to other teams, but most left the company entirely due to lack of support. ~60-65% turnover rate among software engineers.
Continue readingThank you for helping to build Zonars product. We have the utmost respect for our employees and we are always striving to be better. I am not sure where you got the 65% turnover number, but we are well within industry standards when it comes to turnover and it would probably take upwards of 3 years to have that high turnover. We wish you success in the future.

Great Place to Work and Enjoy Work Life Balance
Jan 10, 2019 - Anonymous Employee in Seattle, WARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Company Holidays during the week of Christmas Management walks the talk. They want honest and open feedback and they act on it. The company is for work life balance. Work more than 40 hours when you want too or absolutely needed which is a very rare occurrence. Great social events during the work days. Waffle Wednesdays, Lunch and Learn, Happy Hour, Cinco De Mayo, Turkey Party Day before Thanksgiving and more. Great quarterly recognition on what people and teams did with nice compensation. Everyone is open, friendly and helps everyone else to succeed. They realize mistakes will happen and wants people to fail fast so they can adjust and move forward. There is no blaming when something goes wrong, just figure out how to fix it and move on. Provides bus passes for free
Cons
Company wants to grow and hire more developers but not hire the people to support them like Scrum Masters, Technical Program Manager, etc Planning for the quarter and the year needs to improve but making strides to get better

Pros
- Amazing company culture. Truly striving to win as one. - Work life balance. Very quiet after 5 pm. - Empowered to go after your goals. - Support systems in place. Helpful culture. - Enjoying my relationship with my supervisors and above. - Transparency and honesty in challenges. NOT a CYA company, which is a breath of fresh air. Team's own their successes and opportunities. - Terrific self learning opportunities. There is a great resource center of information.
Cons
- Onboarding could be significantly improved. Coming from telecom/telematics environment will be very helpful. Outside of that, it's really required creating connections to ask the right questions. - Cumbersome sales tracking tool/system. Still a work in progress and with familiarity and a stronger on boarding process, it will likely be an asset long term
