I have been working at Zumiez full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Let's start small:
-you get to listen to music you like.
-you get to wear what you want.
-overall a chill environment to work in.

    Now some more complex stuff:
-The longer you work there the more connections you make. From Store Manager to Sales Associate, everyone talks to customers. You end up meeting tons of Producers, Clothing company reps and even some famous people.
-you get hourly/salary pay PLUS commission. I've seen people double they're paycheck before.
-If you host any extreme sport event you gain access to Zumiez as a sponsor.
-You have a chance of going to Zumiez events free of charge.

    Cons

There is no con that is Zumiez specific. Anything you can think of will happen at any other retail store as well.

    Advice to Management

Lead by example. I've seen too many assistant managers do nothing and expect results.

I have been working at Zumiez full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Skate park out back is cool
-Skating in the office is cool
-The building surrounded by the woods is nice
    -Many Zumiez employees are intelligent.

    Cons

-Ineffective and inefficient work processes all across the company. Very frustrating. Many at the top are very ideologically resistant to change and cover up their mistakes.
-The cultural divide between business functions and the leadership's lack of willingness to address it.
-Unhealthy turnover. The best employees consistently leave after 1-2 years and low performers and people whose only professional experience is at Zumiez stay literally for decades. This pattern is really bad and shows an embracing of the aversion to change and new ideas.
-Most importantly, the company's performance is reflective of the fact that leaders don't seem to realize that the retail industry is changing faster than we can keep up with. Poor decision making at the top.
-If I had a dollar for every time I heard a manager say, "If the stores are open, we are open"

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the changes in the industries. Listen to new ideas and implement them if they make sense. Don't keep doing things the same way as they've always been done. Evaluate and assess whether or not something is working or it isn't.

    I worked at Zumiez part-time

    Pros

Fun, Relaxed, Good VIbes, Opportunities for commission

    Cons

It's commision, so you gotta talk to people and try to sell stuff so sometimes it is uncomfortable. Also, a lot of people try to steal here so it can be awkward and scary confronting them.

I worked at Zumiez part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Vans, none, nope, scam, pathetic

    Cons

Under paid, promoting "cool" people over qualified people, never the same schedule, expected to work whatever but never getting the exact days you requested off because the manager wants to go out and paid and go to edm shows every week.

    Advice to Management

Pay more and you'll get better managers and not bums who moved up from part time and wear vans as their only qualification.

    I worked at Zumiez full-time

    Pros

    Casual dress code.
Fun office environment - open floor plan, no cubicles, skate park in the rear of the building.
Good discounts on products the company sells for home office employees.
Fairly stable company, positioned to do well in their space.
Good opportunities for store employees to to develop careers and work at the home office. Low barrier for entry level roles gives employees that are bought into the culture an easy patch for advancement. Good place to start a career.
Possibility for stock and purchase of shares in the company.
Robust 401k matching and bonus structure.
Entrepreneurial culture, lots of room for employees to develop their roles as they happen.
    Good work/life balance.
    Good medical/dental/vision benefits.

    Cons

As much as Zumiez like to tout itself as an edgy brand for edgy brands, it's pretty conservative. Key projects and initiatives are typically pushed back or ignored due to constant budget constraints. Decisions are more often made to save face for highers up than to improve the company.
Leadership is very weak, insecure, and untrustworthy. Negative side effect of entrepreneurial culture is managers don't manage and leaders don't lead. Expectations are very rarely communicated effectively and decisions are often left to HiPPO's. The same managers and leaders that push for transparency are the same that will meet with employees personally and try to coerce them into giving them positive marks on annual reviews or else.
Company culture is very political. Employees are often looking for ways to get over on one another. "Empowered" culture results in in-fighting between employees who overstep their roles, often leads to feeling of too many cooks in the kitchen. Employees who came up through the stores will get preference for promotions and advancement regardless of their qualifications.
While the company culture is strong, it's nauseating. Off-site workshops and functions feel like summer camp and very rarely get anything substantive accomplished.
Company is not kind to "outsiders." Non-homegrown employees frustrated with inefficiency and ineffective leadership will often be told they just don't "get" the company.
As an apparel company, Zumiez attracts younger employees, which can make the home office feel like high school. Imagine all of the "cool" kids from high school working at the same company. Employees carry a snobbish air to each other, no one acknowledges each other in hallways, and obvious cliques form.
Compensation is generally below market rate, especially for more technical positions.

    Advice to Management

Wake up and lay off the kool-aid. Zumiez has gotten where it is due in large part to luck. Stop focusing on things that don't matter and worry more about making good decisions and driving sales.
