I have been working at Zurich North America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Zurich is a great place to get your foot into the door in the insurance industry and gain initial experience and knowledge, or to work towards the end of your career if you are less invested in upward movement within the company or the industry. My colleagues within my department were knowledgeable, professional, and cooperative. I worked for a manager who encouraged work/life balance, and this appears to be a trend throughout the company. Aside from the high deductible health plan, benefits are generally excellent.

    Cons

There was little room for upward movement, and requests to move laterally were not taken seriously. Additionally, there were limited training opportunities, and employees were not encouraged to develop new skills. The company culture is generally conservative and bureaucratic. Some managers are ineffective and/or play favorites, to the detriment of performance. Claims professionals were discouraged from promoting the company externally, and were generally under-valued by the business units.

    Advice to Management

Value all segments of the company, not just underwriting. Place more emphasis on quality of business written rather than quantity.

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours, company car, good benefits (excluding health insurance ironically), pension and 401k match. I enjoy working with 95% of my colleagues.

    Cons

Corporate politics are quite prevalent resulting in lots of wasted time by employees appeasing all the executives with no legitimate power besides being a pain.

Lean management was just introduced which I think is a great system in theory but again management has hijacked a productivity and efficiency tool and turned it into a really bad version of KPI tracking software.

    Advice to Management

Focus on the customer and cut the fat at the management level. Too many chiefs and not enough indians,

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Competitive salaries and benefits. Excellent 401K match, plus a pension. Ability to buy and sell off days. Flexible work program to set hours and to telecommute more frequently. Large commitment to philanthropy and community. Excellent co-workers, with a few dynamic leaders.

    Cons

Constant change of priorities. IT outsourcing is the standard practice, to companies that can't do the work. Consistently understaffed to deliver on projects that have major business impact. Some managers are truly out of touch with their employees.

    Advice to Management

Stop outsourcing. It doesn't save you money in the long run. Trust me - run the numbers. It doesn't cost $2000 per month to manage a server, more like $20. Get rid of rigid and myopic managers. Work more collaboratively across teams.

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good insurance company. Good people. Good pay. Good benefits. Good flexible work schedule. Trying to get better with technology. Underwriting desktop was nice.

    Cons

Good until the end. Zurich is run by non insurance people from Mackenzie people who are hired and are extremely over paid.
Everything is evaluated by a matrix system.
All pricing decisions are done by a pricing model. Only 5% deviations allowed. Pricing is driven by actuarial. No flexibility. Lots of young staff with no experience. .
Zurich was always trying to be better than Chubb. AIG, and Travelers, but never looked at their got to market strategy. Insurance is a pipeline business. Zurich pricing methodology prices a bad risk aggressively. Tons of bad risks on the books.
    Billing system is horrible.

    Advice to Management

You need underwriters to underwrite and price. A model cannot be the answer. Just a recommendation. Your pricing methodology prices a bad risk aggressively. Tons of bad risks on the books.
Try to blend in changes vs on a 180 degree swing.

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time

    Pros

Zurich has very good benefits; the new corporate headquarters are very nice.

    Cons

Very political; very dysfunctional. Top down driven management initiatives that don't solve the problems.

I have been working at Zurich North America full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Ability to work from home up to 3 days a week.
Able to wear jeans to office any day of the week.
Early release every Friday during Summertime.
    Better than average salary.
    Bonus potential.

    Cons

Too many people in upper management that don't care and/or have a clue about how the workers under them feel about the constant flow of new training/guidelines they put in place.
Can't do job effectively due to all the "red tape" put in place.
Longer you work at company the less your yearly salary increase is going to be.
Never seen so many VP's at one company but yet valuable employees get laid off when it's time for cutbacks.
Work-life balance is a joke. The company constantly talks about how they care that employees have a good work-life balance but so much work is put upon you that you feel like you have to work longer hours to meet the company's expectations.
Too many people in training positions that have nothing to do but sit around and come up with more ridiculous guidelines/programs.
Can't get job done because of constant ridiculous time consuming training and programs that have nothing to do with getting the job done.

    Advice to Management

Start listening to employees that are not in management. Stop making people feel pressured to act like a program that Zurich implements is great when it's not and employees hate it.

I worked at Zurich North America full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Excellent benefits - 401K match, pension program, life insurance, etc.
They encourage participation in employee events. However, this has been cut back for the last couple of years. Most people understand their job and do it well.
Flexible work schedule. LOTS of PTO.

    Cons

Managers are not trained properly. Organization sometimes doesn't make sense (certain departments under the wrong business or support unit). Moral is very low due to consistent layoffs for the last two years. Only go to this company if you're at the Schaumburg headquarters. That's the only way to move up and they are moving many jobs to that location for the tax break.

I worked at Zurich North America full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very good benefit, good management, and compensation were decent.

    Cons

Career opportunity is limited unless you work at the head quarter. Work/life balance are none existence.

    Advice to Management

Cost cutting is too extreme, high performer will leave. Only low performer is willing to stay.
