I worked at Zynga full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great people to work with, excluding upper management. Great perks.

    Cons

Unwillingness to take risks. Missed opportunties second guessing themselves.
No direction from project heads. Lots of thrash.

    Advice to Management

Put trust in the staff. They have been hired for their skills and knowledge of development. Allow them to succeed and Zynga will succeed.
Currently there are too many uninvolved making decisions that basically block success.

I have been working at Zynga full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    1) People - You'll have fun in the Bangalore office
    2) Work - Most games are live ops which are still played by lots of people.
    3) Benefits - Free food, relaxed work environment, centrally located
    4) Data-driven - Learn from the best about how to use analytics to make better decisions

    Cons

    1) Not player focused - Hard targets from upper-management pushes game teams to make games payer oriented. Great in short-term. Very bad in long term.
    2) Unsure future - Stock price is terrible. Regular top-management changes. Each change brings a new strategic shift.

    I worked at Zynga full-time

    Pros

Benefits are off the hook! Great medical and dental. Many other benefits including pet insurance.

    Employee stock purchase plan.

    Open vacation policy.

    Cons

If you want to make games, this is not the place. Great at buying other people's games but not coming up with original ideas.

Current CEO is great at selling smoke and mirrors to investors at the cost of other people's careers. You are simply a number, not a person.

There is a lot of wasteful spending. People are being laid off while corporate enjoys massages, brewery, personal trainers, and full 3 meals a day.

    Advice to Management

Be a game company. Employees should feel creative and should be having fun. They should not feel enslaved by the almighty dollar, snubbing ideas to analytics and fearing layoffs due to your lack of innovation.

Too many managers and executives! Trim there instead of trimming the talent that actually makes the product.

I have been working at Zynga full-time

    Pros

Data driven company, so you can learn a lot about the mechanics of free to play games. Has to pay well for a game company to attract and retain talent.

    Cons

Too many layers of management - an engineer in my area is 8 steps from the CEO. However none of the managers will actually follow through on any strategy. No one is empowered to make decisions, but individuals and managers are held accountable for the decisions of executives. If you like an environment where CYA is your primary job, then Zynga is a good place to work.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to keep everything secret. Set strategies and state problems to be solved, then let your workers solve the problems. Be smart about cost savings - cut half of the layers of management instead of cutting the people actually creating products. Most of all -- listen.
