I worked at athenahealth full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Awesome and smart people, relaxed and casual work environment, opportunities for development schedule and work from home flexibility depending on job function

    Cons

High level management seems to make decisions based on the way the wind was blowing without thought from or input by those actually doing the job. Sometimes felt like changes were made just for the sake of shaking things up.

    I worked at athenahealth full-time

    Pros

lots of flexibility, great people, lots to learn and get involved in

    Cons

senior leadership is a mess and are struggling to create a clear and concise message, they say their people are first but they have no problem laying of 9% of the employee base, they tell you this was necessary to bring athena into the future. The same senior leaders that are delivering this message are they same ones who greed and lack of leadership got the company in a position to require layoffs

    Advice to Management

get synced up on your message and make sure it is being communicated clearly at all levels and be really transparent not just on the easy stuff

I have been working at athenahealth full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - compelling mission
    - collaborative environment within the associate and manager cohorts
    - flexible schedule: acceptable to WFH periodically
    - physical environment: many pods in the office have lots of natural light and the campus cafe is great

    Cons

    - too many reorgs (common for there to be multiple in a single year)
    - efforts to address declining sales growth have been well considered but poorly executed
    - morale has declined in light of the restructuring

    Advice to Management

Settle on an org structure and a roadmap: then stick to them. There should be no more than one reorg a year.

I have been working at athenahealth full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Employees genuinely care about the customer's experience. Very interesting workplace with frequent changes and many opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute.

    Cons

Managers tend to have more power than their knowledge allows them to properly utilize.

    Advice to Management

If this company can survive the push to short sited near-term profitability, get out of the way of the individual contributors and let them do the work that is vital to the athenahealth's mission.

I worked at athenahealth full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Smart people.
    - Caring people.
    - Room for initiatives.
    - Maybe investing in right stuff going forward.
    - Ostensibly working in an impactful industry.

    Cons

    - Sagging under the weight of tech debt.
    - Underinvested in critical technical functions for too long (although this is changing!).
    - Management does not seem to know what functions are important - can't focus on one thing.
    - The only way up for non-technical staff (and even then) is through initiatives. Guess what that means? Very scattered directions, with many people defending their own fiefdoms.
    - Changing priorities, and not in a good way.

There's an old saying that originates in the Bronx. I'll miss the clowns, but I won't miss the circus.

    Advice to Management

Learn what business units are critical; don't rely on consultants to tell you. Gut the head of product. The rank and file product people are gold.

I have been working at athenahealth full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Great work/life balance with flexible WFH arrangements and plenty of PTO.
    - The products and services really are cutting edge in the EHR/RCM marketplace
    - career development opportunities are there if you're willing to work for them

    Cons

    - Constant re-organization of the company structure
    - Lots of post-grads right out of school, kind of immature vibe at the office
    - Too much focus on company culture

    Advice to Management

Instill a sense of fiduciary responsibility in your workforce, remind everyone that we're publicly traded. athenaNet the product can be focused on the provider/patient, but we need to focus athenahelath the company on the share holder.

Stop trying to force culture, just let it ride. Don't cave to the shrill internet minority kicking and screaming for diversity and inclusion. Remind folks that working here is voluntary.

Constantly evolving , continuously improving the organizational approach to change management to adapt to parallel change in the marketplace, only hires individuals who are vested, and fit the culture making for a great network of hard-working colleagues and friends.

    Cons
