I worked at athenahealth full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Product scrum teams all contain 3-5 developers, plus one Product Owner and embedded UX/tech writer support. (With a few exceptions, of course.) Teams are cohesive, working together to build the product with both short- and long-term vision.

    Cons

As the company is scaling, the CTO is strongly driving several initiatives that run counter to the existing culture. Tech employees at athena are, in general, distrustful of senior leadership. The technology itself is also highly buggy and difficult-to-use -- which seems to be industry standard in healthcare, but may be jarring to newcomers.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work with employee engagement! Even at the lowest levels, I feel like my voice is heard and can be carried to the appropriate levels of the organization.

I have been working at athenahealth full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Incredible culture (open/communicative, casual, tech-minded, mission-focused, and there are dogs everywhere!)
    - Amazing office spaces
    - Transparent leadership
    - Work/life integration
    - Great perks!
    - Company is going through a lot of changes but has course-corrected and is poised for a lot of growth as we move forward.

    Cons

    - Necessary layoffs have hit the culture
    - Slightly below-market in terms of compensation

    Advice to Management

    - Continue to be as transparent as possible with employees about future changes and where we are headed.
    - Financial cutbacks are necessary, but it's important to make sure that the employees are still feeling valued in terms of comp, benefits, and perks.
    - Continue to assess competitive landscape. What are the hottest tech companies out there and how can we compete with them?
    - Continue to value the institutional knowledge of long-time employees.

I have been working at athenahealth full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Ridiculously talented workforce loaded with Ivy League grads, MBAs, and mission driven executives led by a visionary. Will be the leading platform company in healthcare in 3 years. Unbelievable place to launch a career in healthcare and build a network.

    Cons

Trimming back on excessive spending to focus on core value drivers and innovation. Spending got out of hand over last few years creating opportunity for active investors to engage, but executive team has embraced the challenge and is proactively righting the ship. Will have some growing pains through end of 2017as company refocuses and realigns workforce, but will be a top place to work over next 5 years.

    Advice to Management

Continue to drive the renewed focus on operational efficiency and innovate to improve healthcare.
