    A work in progress

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Pre-covid, athena's Watertown campus was incredible. There were always people buzzing around, collaborating—you could feel the energy in the air. Now, most of athena's US-based employees work remotely 80+% of the time and with that, the company's culture has changed dramatically, for the better or worse. Lately, I've really appreciated the transparency and insight the CEO, Bob, has provided.

    Cons

I joined athenahealth for the people and environment. The environment has changed, but management is actively trying to do all they can to find a balance that works best for remote vs. hybrid vs. in-office employees and the company's bottom line. There's been what appears to be a mass exodus of executive leadership over the past year. There's been an incredible staff turnover, and the culture isn't what it used to be. Remedying any of these, and other, issues will take time, but it's hard to see any sort of bright light at the end of the tunnel.

    Churn and Burn

Nov 29, 2022 - Sales Development Representative (SDR) in Watertown, MA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

You have the ability to make a lot of lateral moves here, and of course vertical ones. Best onboarding experience ever. Lots of expensive resources you get for free. Top-notch offices (plural). Cool company parties. Collaborative departments. Inspirational vision.

    Cons

The managers fire anyone they don’t personally like and HR is either oblivious or enables them. Lots of unethical treatment of employees that goes unchecked. Pay is below market in all roles.

    Bait and Switch

Nov 21, 2022 - Sales Development Representative (SDR) in Watertown, MA
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

You can collaborate with other departments easily. There are very few silos. WFH policy very generous. You can switch jobs internally like I did. You can easily coast doing essentially nothing.

    Cons

Manipulative management and surprisingly unimpressive peer group. Cult-like mentality. Most coworkers have the exact opposite of imposter-syndrome, they think they think of themselves way too highly. I would say that the main reason so many employees speak so highly of this company is because they are unqualified to work elsewhere. They hire a lot of people on the sales team that have zero experience.

Overall a good company to work for

Oct 15, 2022 - Project Manager in Watertown, MA

    Pros

athenahealth overall has a good culture. The company’s mission is engaging and everyone I’ve encountered in my time here is passionate about what they do.

    Cons

There are definitely certain areas where they are lacking in their product and although they say those areas are part of the strategy, I have yet to see much action taken

    Pros

Very “fashion forward” when it comes to employers. Athena is always coming up with ways to keep your day to day fresh and exciting. It seems like everyone has a quirky personality and a “‘must love pets” attitude.

    Cons

The job is often ambiguous and there is a lot to learn.
