I have been working at balena full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Amazing international team, great product with very interesting customers. Company cares about employees and there's a lot of flexibility. The company is designed for remote work which makes it quite a unique experience.

    Cons

There's a lot of work to do so the job can be demanding (not necessarily a bad thing but can get stressful at times).

I have been working at balena full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Remote working - Snacks - Some good people in the company (dwindling though) - fairly good pay (if you fight for it)

    Cons

    - 'flat' hierarchy means that there is no chance of personal growth - CEO views people as server instances ready to spin up or down, the place is a revolving door of people getting hired and fired. - no focus on employee happiness - no vision for the product. there is always a new thing that management wants to work on whilst the core product suffers from lack of attention.

I have been working at balena full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Being able to work remotely with an all-star team of people from all over the world that when not on a specific task, always find things to push on their own .

    Cons

Always trying to do it the right way, can make things more difficult in the short term. Depending on your timezone, some calls might require you to work during an non-preferred time slot.

I have been working at balena full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Balena take a refreshing approach to growing and operating an organisation, with an almost flat hierarchy, employees are encouraged to be involved in any area of the business where they believe they can add value. By making recruitment decisions that focus more on skill and attitude than academic record and past job titles, they have built a team of brilliant, ambitious, open-minded people who are eager to support and also learn from one another. Having worked for and with companies who offer their employees zero support, push targets and are stuck in a mindless system of unexplainable policies and procedures, joining balena has been an absolute breath of fresh air.

    Cons

I do sometimes miss working in an office environment so I guess this could be a 'con' for some people, however, the pro's of remote working enable me to achieve a great work/life balance.

I have been working at balena full-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - A lot of freedom. At Resin you typically manage your own priorities and tasks often nearly 100%. Somebody will maybe ask you to do something high priority sometimes, but otherwise you're expected to keep an eye on what's coming next, help move things forwards yourself, and actively talk to people for more information when you're not sure. - Lovely team. Lots of very clever also very friendly people from a huge range of cultures, backgrounds and technical specialties - Very transparent about absolutely everything including all planning of future features. This is an important part of why self planning works: everybody understands what features are coming next, has had input into their design, and so can plan their own to help that forward - Very very open-source - Technically very interesting product, fast growing with very passionate and engaged customers - Interesting and powerful technology well used throughout - Moving fast, but mostly only cutting corners for speed with careful discussion, and planning for subsequent tidy up - Work whenever and wherever you like (as long as your team are aware of when you'll be online) - Many perks: Friday hackdays, free hardware for anything relevant, new sign on equipment budget, free top of the line noise-cancelling headphones for calls on day 1, annual summit (usually Greece)

    Cons

    - Minimal structure can make things feel very adhoc at times - Minimal structure and remote-focus *requires* you to be excellent at managing yourself, working independently and over-communicating what's going on - Diversity in race, nationality, language, age, sexuality etc is high, but there is very little gender diversity, especially on the development team - Large amount of freedom can make the moments where there are things to do feel sudden and restrictive by comparison - Product development sometimes moves in large jumps, and changes and new priorities can suddenly arrive at high speed (typical to many startups however)
