I worked at eBay full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Exceptionally friendly and amicable people in European divisions.
    - Pay way above what market pays. (Especially when you take bonuses and RSUs into account.)
    - Good work-life balance. Everyone respects it.
    - The company is accommodating of your family and health constraints. I have not been in a better place when it comes to this aspect.
    - Many team building activities.

    Cons

    - The biggest con is that the mothership i.e. eBay US is an ancient organisation that controls the European division pretty much in every way. EPD doesn't have any real control over things. Many cons I discuss below stem directly from this.
    - There is some very good work happening in eBay, but it's all in the US, and some in Israel. UK and Germany usually get the leftover projects nobody else wanted to work on.
    - Legacy. The projects you inherit are simply ancient. Those who worked on those are not around. Who owned/owns what is sometimes not even documented. You will often find yourself wondering how anything works at all.
    - A lot of in-house and archaic technology. eBay has had a massive case of NIH (Not Invented Here) syndrome. They have their own libraries, build tools, web frameworks, IDEs, front-end frameworks, logging and monitoring solutions, and so on. Some of these are very poorly designed, poorly documented, and poorly supported. There is not much push to switch to open source solutions with large communities and support. It's extremely difficult to deal with this. Much more so than you might think at the outset.
    - Due to the above aspects, the longer you stay in the company, the more you lose relevance in the industry. Many skills you will gain here are specific to eBay's problems and tools, and are not easily transferable to anything.
    - Constant churn. There are exodus waves at least once a year.

    Advice to Management

Please be honest about the realities of the situation during interviews. That may help you avoid people joining in excitement and leaving in disappointment just in a few months.

    Pros

Work on hard problems, make an impact. Great focus on culture and values; not just lip service but actually implemented.

    Cons

Limited opportunity to grow in London office. Culture is changing now.

I have been working at eBay as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very flexible working hours and company is very open to working from home, office is very relaxed and friendly

    Cons

Very few permanent positions, management team are slightly incompetent, team structure is very messy and uncoordinated, departments don't work together, a lot of money gets wasted

    Advice to Management

Structure teams effectively and train management staff on people management

I have been working at eBay full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Really supportive and fun team environment - globally and in London. Strategy team all ex McK/BCG/Bain, super bright and fun to work with (feels a bit like consulting but without crazy hours). Lots of exciting change underway, means you get to work on some pretty far out projects. Strategy serve as swat team to CEO, so get good traction in the business.

    Cons

Lots of work with San Jose, means you get well acquainted with Virtual Meetings (often 5-10 screens at a time). Can sometimes result in late meetings but they're getting better at syncing time zones.

I worked at eBay full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are some great people there, really passionate about the organisation and genuinely trying to do the best job they can, without indulging the politics.

    - great induction
    - some great people

    Cons

It's dripping with politics and, when I was there, the management created a blame culture, people were clearly afraid of making mistakes and it led to me being advised to 'make sure after you've agreed something in a meeting that you have everything in writing otherwise they'll hang you out to dry'.

    - politics
    - a tired and inflexible technical infrastructure
    - bad location for Londoners (Richmond) unless you live in Richmond, and an office that looks like it hasn't changed since the dot com boom (complete with dust coated pool tables with no balls)
    - absolutely no idea how to speak to customers
    - you basically can't get anything done without it being an existing imitative from the US mothership

    Advice to Management

Give people the autonomy and freedom to try and fail
