I worked at hhgregg full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

They had nice coworkers, you are paid according to your performance. The store is air conditioned, and you get employee discounts, too. They had online training, as well as periodic trainings given by specialists in a hotel in Pennsylvania.

    Cons

You work against a draw, so you pay back what they pay you in advance if you don't sell enough to cover your minimum wage. Selling warranty is highly necessary to keep the job.

    Advice to Management

They did a nice job when I worked there. One thing many didn't like is when the ownership made us stay open til 8pm on Sundays and 10pm on every other day.

    Pros

    Nice TV and appliances.

    Cons

They will hire anyone that will work for nothing.there is no money to be made. Don't waist your time

    Advice to Management

To most management and RM and DM learn to be polite to the staff. They think there poop don't stink and you are no better then anyone one else.

    Pros

    good coworkers full hour lunch

    Cons

absolutely ludicrous pay scale, you would have to do manual labor and cleaning for 7.25 an hour that you had to pay back hoping somebody would come in to buy something.

    Advice to Management

just fix the pay structure. Especially if you are going to pay 1% on most items sold. Just make the job $12 an hour with 1% commission on all items

I worked at hhgregg full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The real benefit is having that employee discount. Buying things at cost is a huge discount!

    Cons

Company is out to screw your commission.
Mess with the price and your commission percentage also drops. Which seems fair except Managers will wheel and deal anything and also the company consistently runs 11% off discounts forcing you to drop the price on merchandise. That $2500 fridge you were selling at 4% commission making you $100 is now 1% commission at $25 because the company threw a promo code at all the customers.
Also, you don't get commission until merchandise is delivered and all their warranty tiers are based on weekly DELIVERED items.
$4000 in a week of protection gets you 20% commission on all of that, as long as they're delivered all in the same week. Which customers who are purchasing appliances all have them planned around moving into new homes and remodels making it impossible to line all that $4000 dollars of protection you sold into the same week.
Because commission is based on weekly delivered items, when you first start, you'll probably be $1000 in draw because all your sales are being delivered after your pay period ends. This makes you owe the company money because you are in a full-commission environment built to screw you over.
Management is typical retail brown-nosers. They will talk you up for management and then conveniently leave out important information you would need to help get you a promotion.
You are required to be 100% flexible for hours, for full-timers that's a fair request, but be prepared to be working 10-hours in one day with zero traffic and zero commission. Work-life balance in extremely low because of this.

    Advice to Management

Upper management needs to get real with their associates and treat them like actual people.
Also, all the ones I knew in Florida apparently had some drug-pact going on which made working with them extremely uncomfortable. Having a manager come in late noticeable high, shaky, and itchy is incredible unprofessional.

I have been working at hhgregg full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good compensation if you apply yourself. Paid vacation and benefits. Overall, a friendly work environment when the salespeople get along. Many of the stores have a more relaxed, laid-back approach to managing the sales staff. This, I think, keeps the big earners happier and focused on making money.

    Cons

Long hours are part of the gig, but on occasion the schedules appear to be poorly thought out. I suppose they want to err on the side of being over-staffed, but too many shifts are much ado about nothing during a big promotion. Upper management appears heavy-handed with store management, causing the stress to be taken out on the sales/customer service staff. Sometimes store management is myopic when it comes to procedures, hoping to please upper management's all-too-frequently capricious demands. You have to be good at researching and protecting your commission. The system makes it easy to short-change you, so you may spend a few hours each paycheck searching for lost commission. I average about $90 in commission filebacks per paycheck. That adds up.

    Advice to Management

Stop stepping over dollars for pennies. Be flexible. Life's not all scotch and cheesecake for everyone, so take heed of the needs of the staff. Allow customer service to take advantage of more incentives. This is your front line to the customer. If they don't care, the customer doesn't care to remain loyal.

    Pros

Great employee discount, family type workplace. Overall not a bad place to work for you can definitely make money.

    Cons

Probably the biggest con is the commission change that took place, for a new person money would be good, but for someone that has been there not so much.

    Advice to Management

Change the commission structure back to what it was before you lose all your great employees.

    Cons

Managers are liars...the employment postings are misleading..pay is horrible...company is CHEAP. no wonder they are debt free. They don't even have internet speed above dial-up for work purposes.

    Advice to Management

listen to your teams and pay better. the charlotte area is about to get a competitor and they will loose everyone that works for hh.

    Pros

If you are sales you can have direct impact on your salary. If you are willing to work, they will hire you. The salespeople are great to work with.

    Cons

Low commission rate. (1% to 3%)average. Terrible work schedules. You must sell extended warranties to make money and to keep your job.

    Advice to Management

Don't talk down to your employees. Its not their fault you are a manager at HH Gregg. Your stock price is very low for a reason.
