    I worked at hmv part-time

    Pros

It was a job, and generally the customer service aspects were good as the customers were great. It was relatively simple to pick up on.

    Cons

It was a 20 hour contract, but some weeks they made us work 37.5 hours. The staff and managers were all new and inexperienced, and regularly swore on the shop floor at sales assistants. Never experienced anything like it.

    Advice to Management

More experience and training is required. Where they have problems with members of staff they need to deal with this in a professional manner, and not on the shop floor.

    Pros

Nice colleagues on the shop floor
Interesting conversations with customers about music, tech, etc.

    Cons

Misguided management who are under pressure from those higher up forcing them to forget what it was like when they worked on the shop floor.
Having to try and sell the PureHMV card - no one wants to pay for a loyalty card at a place they rarely shop when they can get the same products cheaper online.
The struggles HMV have gone through have led to different business strategies but won't necessarily lead to success.

    Advice to Management

    Change PureHMV.

I worked at hmv part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Co-workers are great to work with, engaging with customers and getting to know regulars, staff discount on certain products was good.

    Cons

Incompetent, unprofessional and dishonest manager who has favourites, manager seemed to know little about the business and product and was really there to promote "link saves". Little flexibility in hours.

    Advice to Management

Honesty is key. If you take issue with staff, confront them directly and professionally rather than sending nasty-worded second-hand messages via other staff members. Find a new manager who does none of what I've listed here and under cons.
