I worked at hmv as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Staying connected with new Music, Games and Films and finding new interests.
    - Diverse employees into different things, causing you to discover things you might enjoy too but never knew about.
    - The work isn't 'hard', so long as you aren't lazy.
    - The pay is generally what you expect from a 'sales assistant' role; and considering the work is mostly dealing with fun multi-media things more than 'do you want cheese with that?', it's not a bad job for the money offered.
    - 35% (when I worked there) off everything is preeeettty good for someone into Films, Games and Music.

    Cons

    - Dated computer-system makes really trying to find things for customers that aren't as well-known harder than it has to be.
    - As with most customer-based jobs, you can get some very hard-to-deal-with people with little reason to act the way they do.
    - No real opportunity to 'rise up the ranks' should you want to; you basically just have to apply like anyone else would, meaning opportunities in your local city could be completely based on luck / coincidence.

I worked at hmv as a contractor

    Pros

    - Good atmosphere
    - Easy to sell products
    - Co-Workers were super friendly

    Cons

    - Some staff, notably the Senior Sales and above seemed overworked
-- This affected the help standard Sales Assistants required
    - More feedback on how you were doing could have been useful
    - Hours could change at incredibly short notice
    - Your performance is often graded on reviews and how many loyalty cards you can sell (which is often difficult because the cards are completely useless and cost £3)

    Advice to Management

If you want to sell more cards, make them free. Don't judge your employees based on numbers a hard worker and personality goes miles in that environment. I've witnessed it myself.
