    Pros

You get to work with great people, the staff are what make the company. Obviously, if you're passionate about music or film/TV it's enjoyable to be able to talk about those things with customers all day every day. It's also very easy to progress if you work hard and take the initiative to learn about the role above you (which the company makes easy via online learning and in-store coaching).

    Cons

There's a high level of stress at peak periods due to workload sent to stores from head office, despite the increased footfall. Lines of communication are not very strong - it can sometimes take a long time to get an answer from anybody outside store level and it would be better to hear from the CEO more often as he is actually very motivating.

    Advice to Management

Invest in the people more, as they are definitely the company's biggest strength. There are some really talented, inspiring people in stores with great ideas. Support them in the busiest periods and reward them properly when they achieve great results.

    Pros

Staff discount, the product and the people.

    Cons

The company lost it's way when the focus left music and how it was changing.

    Advice to Management

Hire the people who know and love the product.

I worked at hmv full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The atmosphere and team were excellent to work with and in many ways we were a family. The benefits at the time were great and the salary was good, for the time.

    Cons

The management ranged from great to vindictive as retail often seems to hire people with no people skills and place them in positions of power.

    Advice to Management

Treat staff fairly and remove the bad eggs straight away so that you have no excuse for treating good staff poorly.
