I worked at iDirect Technologies (Less than a year)

    Pros

The company make a great product and is accelerating quickly. iDirect has a bright future with new solutions to connectivity issues throughout the world.

    Cons

The company is moving very quickly and growing, so there are alot of reorganization but they seem for the best. Retaining talent is tough when moving so quickly.

    Advice to Management

If the company would invest more in training, I think that could be beneficial. They should continue to invest in internship programs and young talent.

I worked at iDirect Technologies full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Flexible hours
    Interesting technology
    Decent amount of PTO

    Cons

The best Engineers have been leaving for the last 3 years
Lack of bonuses for the last 3+ years
    Going through layoffs
Agile in this company is a joke
    No way to move up
    Work goes unnoticed
    Nothing is automated
Sink or swim mentality for new hires
Use it or lose it PTO
    Low raises

    Advice to Management

Be competitive with your salaries and raises. Your best engineers have been leaving over a 5% raise. The Agile product owners are a joke, a team's backlog is filled with worthless tasks and upper management complains that the team is doing nothing of value.

This company used to be an awesome place to work for. Flexible hours, good benefits, interesting technology. I used to recommend it all the time I wouldn't recommend this company in the current state.

I have been working at iDirect Technologies full-time

    Pros

Good health benefits, but contribution per paycheck is high. Good 401k options. Good place to work if you want to do nothing and good at people politics

    Cons

Everything, very disorganized workplace. No proper planning or direction. Most of the developers are disqualified and low performers. Good developers are forced to work long hours. Management is greedy about their own career and does not care even about direct reporters.

    Advice to Management

This is a professional place, stop being too greedy and use some common sense. Special appreciation to the new VP who is trying to make the things right at higher level, he should start looking at the lower levels too. Warn the developers whose performance is consistently below average and appreciate those who work hard.

I have been working at iDirect Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

None really if you are smart and ambitious.
Here is the list in case you find any of them as an advantage:

1- Job security since no matter what is your performance you never get fired
2- 3 weeks of vacation, use it or lose it
3- $89 Christmas party ticket in a cheap hotel
4- Free Banana once a week
    5- Free Coffee
6- Avid dedication to reinventing the wheel

    Cons

1- Exclusively H1 Visa employees from India and China
2- Communication barriers since no one speaks English or can write a sentence
    3- Constant re-organization
    4- Multi-level bureaucracy
5- Pretending to be Agile and just cheating the system
    6- High employee turnover
7- No bonus most of the time due to unattainable sales goals
8- If there is any bonus, it has 50% tax
9- No one knows what are they doing
10- 90% of the employees are architects, principals and seniors for no reason
    11- Bad employee performance appraisal
    12- Bad employee benefits
    13- Non-competitive salary

    Advice to Management

Is there any management at all?
If yes, please step down and use a board of directors.
New management, New friends, New relatives, New Agile! Dream on...zzzzz
Use American employees with real resumes, work experience and education
Get rid of Vice Presidents, Senior directors, Directors and Development managers
Cancel your fake $20,000 employee referral bonus and instead increase the salary of current employees

I worked at iDirect Technologies (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Highly advanced in technologies, reasonable benefits, fitness center, cafeteria, tennis. Equal opportunities place. Aggressive "never to make" schedules. Working through nights quite possible.

    Cons

Lack of vision from management, somewhat too bureaucratic. Some architectural solutions are overcomplicated therefore difficult to maintain or improve. Friendly atmosphere.

    Advice to Management

Probably the ratio managers engineers is too high. Be more proactive in making important decisions and taking responsibilities. Do not assume employees are obligated to work long hours.

I have been working at iDirect Technologies full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great location, good restaurants in the area. It is very difficult to come up with more positive things to say here.

    Cons

Currently the company stays afloat by pushing aggressive sales of legacy products; those were developed when iDirect was a good place to work at. Unfortunately today that is not the case.
Reorganizations: iDirect went through two reorganizations in less than 1 year – it's a total chaos. Currently the company is focused on implementing the Agile-Waterfall process.
High rate of attrition: 5 high-level executives, including the CTO, left the company. About 12 well-qualified, knowledgeable, and integral engineers left the company in the past 8 months. Today the company pays a good amount of money for a referral.
Toxic politics: most employees in the company are divided into camps (scrum teams, squads, and guilds – yes, those are official) lead by incompetent mid-management. Throw-over-the-wall mentality constantly leads to laud confrontations, accusations, and toxic working environment.
Technical debt: the company is drowning in it's technical debt. Poorly-written and undocumented code is the foundation of legacy and new products. Engineers spend about 75% of their time reverse-engineering legacy systems. Most people who wrote the code are no longer around.
Unrealistic schedule and long working hours: it is expected from employees to stay late and work trough weekends on regular basis, which necessary to sustain unrealistic schedules. Lunch meeting are very common; however, lunch in not provided. The burnout rate is very high.
There are many great high-tech companies in Northern Virginia and Maryland; VT iDirect is not one of them.

    Advice to Management

Understand and address the real problems in the company. Ask why the attrition rate is so high. Slim down the mid-management.

I have been working at iDirect Technologies full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Phone screening is very easy and not difficult to get onsite interview opportunity. Good way to gain interview experience for fresh students.

    Cons

The salary is not attractable. The current project is boring and no future. The cost for the onsite interview will not be reimbursed. The HR is the worst based on my 30+ interview experience.

I have been working at iDirect Technologies full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Location is good. The company has been up and running for 20 years which only means it was a good company.

For junior engineers, iDirect is a good starting place to learn both technical skills and office politics, due to its high physical and mental pressure.

    Cons

    1. Low base salary like it offers always.
Bonus was good at 20%, however due to rapid loss of revenue, we only received 2% in this year.

    2. iDirect won a big project several years ago which is the start of all the chaos today. A lot of new engineers were hired at loose interviewing process.
Due to the inexperience of the management team and a series of bad decisions made by the senior management, the project is now delayed for 1-2 years and en route of failure. The delayed new product is causing loss of once-loyal customers and revenue.

    3. People is leaving iDirect because of the dark future, the low pay and high workload, and the politics. Many of the engineers left are technically important which can't be replaced shortly. This has worsen the situation of the failing project.

    4. The company is over-hierarchied causing lots of overhead as well as confusions.

    5. Unlike the past, the company is now driven by a group of management people who don't understand the products iDirect develops.
Roughly half of the technical managers (who only manage 3, 4 engineers on hands-on product development) have no idea about how satellite system works, even though they go from meeting to meeting everyday just to make them visible.

    6. Satellite technology is not as cool as it sounds. It is actually made of a mix of sophisticated (outdated) technologies due to its high requirements of reliability and stability. For entry-levels, it is impossible to learn here the cutting-edge techniques and skills.

    7. Many other big companies like Google, Facebook, SpaceX had already started its satellite projects or replacement projects. iDirect will face the most fearful challenges in the next few years. Are we ready for it? Sadly no.

    Advice to Management

We have to be realistic and stay focus only on the core business.
