    Pros

Great culture and team. The iRobot team is great to work in. Very collaborative and fun. There is always tons of work, but luckily the work is interesting and challenging! The people are grade A professionals!

    Cons

Sometimes work can stack up and everything is a priority. Even though management works on this, it is still a challenge.

I have been working at iRobot as an intern

    Pros

There is a very clear fun atmosphere and culture of collaboration. The products made are superior to competition, so it's awesome to see why and how that is.

    Cons

The products, although superior to competition, are not that widely used. It's not like working for Apple, where they are nearing 1 billion iPhones sold, or a car company.

    Advice to Management

Build a better mentorship system between full timers and interns. Allow for more rotation so an intern can work with many different teams and engineers.

    Pros

Very interesting robotics platforms. They are using current technology and have very interesting design challenges. They are cutting edge in the robotics field.

    Cons

Projects sometimes get behind due to changing requirements. Requirements are sometimes very fluid well into the project design cycle. This often results in the contributors having to work extensively to keep the project deliverables on track.

I worked at iRobot (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There is a lot of really cool technology to learn and play with every day. You will literally step over or around robots in the halls everyday. The work life balance is great, and you will be rewarded for getting results regardless of the number of hours you work. The engineers are extremely sharp and hardworking. There are great career advancement opportunities, and iRobot strives to promote from within and train its workforce. In my time there I went from associate to principal engineer, then into engineering management. I cannot say enough great things about what iRobot has done to provide me with career development opportunities.

    Cons

There is a very odd engineering management dynamic. Many engineering leaders are not competent in the core areas of iRobot products and are disconnected from product / program teams. In the last few years, software has become more important to iRobot, but the management team has not been able to keep up with the trend. Only 1 or 2 program managers are actually interested in engaging their software team members and many competency managers seem unable or uninterested in working on programs. It creates a lot of unnecessary confusion and frustration for the people working on these teams.

    Advice to Management

Spend more time focusing on improving the engineering leadership. There are many senior managers, directors that spend all of their time managing up and politicking. It is isolating senior leadership from the reality. Get real engineering leaders in place and make them actually accountable for something concrete.

    Pros

Great atmosphere. Co-mingled with engineering and programs. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff. Fun atmosphere.

    Cons

Government work dwindled and most of staff were let go. Not a con regarding the company, just the business unit.

    Advice to Management

Should have had people more government oriented. Focus was more on the home robots side than government and industrial robots.
