nCino - Great Place to Grow Up, Bad Place to Grow Old
Jun 29, 2022 - Software EngineerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- GREAT people, both smart and fun - Benefits (HSA w/ employer contributions is a BIG win, employer-paid health insurance, average 401k match, great PTO offerings) - Good work culture (especially in office - happy hours, snacks, team lunches, etc.) - Good entry-level pay - Great place to learn software at a foundational level nCino really fosters a great work culture for Software Engineers. It is a great place to start your career with pretty good entry-level pay. You'll learn from some great engineers and get really good coding foundations. There's also a lot of autonomy and bouncing around of ideas to solution problem sets.
Cons
- P2+ salary compared to the industry, especially for P2/P3 engineers who were promoted compared external hires - Promotion timelines/criteria - Experienced and senior-level personnel turnover - Management is out-of-touch with the value that the software engineers bring to the company. Management sees the engineers as easily-replaceable (which is NOT the case), often switching people to different teams to backfill for other roles where people have left There are two main problems with nCino, but they're VERY fixable (provided management decides to do something about it), both relating to compensation and promotions. The first is that the pay is average, or slightly below-average, especially for a software company. The second is that the promotion process is unclear and ridden with red tape that makes it very difficult to understand the criteria and expectations for career advancement. There are arbitrary timelines, both around how long you've been in a role and when you can get promoted. They moved away from only promoting on anniversary dates to being able to get promoted on a quarterly basis, but even this seems pretty rare. The first two bullet points relate to the third for the cons: nCino doesn't value the people (engineers and others) that make the software that the company is built upon. If they did, they'd show that value through compensation and there wouldn't be the rate of turnover of very senior and experienced individuals (not just Software Engineers) leaving the company. Even despite these cons, it's a fantastic company (especially for people newer in their careers) that has a really bright future. It can go from good to great with a reality check to reassess priorities and compensation strategy.

Overall, outstanding folks and culture. Great leadership, little churn on the sales team during my several years there.

Promotions are difficult for remote workers, if you want to move up, colocate at HQ or on of the main offices.
