I worked at volpe (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This place has a great work culture-- they encourage employees to work hard, but they understand a need for work/life balance. Great benefits, and if you work over 40 hours a week, you can get the hours over as Overtime (paid time and a half) or as credit hours, which can be used for vacation, or be cashed out when you leave.

    Cons

Unfortunately, like most of government service, it is impossible to fire people, and managers are uncomfortable or unable to properly correct bad staff behavior. What this means is that mediocre or even actively terrible employees (I'm talking lazy, on Facebook all the time, or just plain incompetent), are left in the ranks, sucking up precious energy, resources, and morale. Sometimes these troublesome employees are shuffled around from group to group, because managers don't want to deal with them, until they are left in the position where they will do the least amount of damage. It is unfortunate because this generally leads to a lot of stress and decreased morale in the team because team members are left to pick up slack.

    Advice to Management

I think management can use some training in how to properly set expectations with staff. Unfortunately, I think the fear of reprisal from employees, in the form of EEO or HR action means that managers are afraid of ever talking to their underperforming employees or taking constructive steps towards making sure everybody is working well together.

I have been working at volpe (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, very flexible work environment, job security, lots of opportunities to join interesting projects. In response to other comments: if you are unenthusiastic about your current project, go find another one! If you stay more than a few months on a project that doesn't excite you, then you have no one to blame but yourself. Be active about driving your own career!

    Cons

Some strict policies; dated physical infrastructure, lots of overhead: training, timekeeping, mandatory meetings.

    Advice to Management

Center seems to be a bit adrift right now. Management needs to figure out what the center is really good at and focus both hiring and contracts on those areas. Right now the work is a bit of potpourri, which leads to inconsistent results and employee satisfaction.
