    McCormick named to head up Tribune editorial board

    The Chicago Tribune has named John McCormick as editor of the editorial page, the newspaper's influential platform for opinion leadership. McCormick, who as deputy editorial page editor has led the editorial board on an interim basis since February, succeeds Bruce Dold, who was promoted to publisher and editor-in-chief of the Tribune this year.

    Chicago Tribune names new editor, Gerould Kern to retire

    Gerould Kern, who led the Chicago Tribune through bankruptcy and into the digital age, announced his retirement and stepped down as editor, effective Wednesday. Kern will be succeeded by Bruce Dold, the Tribune's editorial page editor, who ascends to the top of the masthead after nearly four decades with the newspaper.

    Tribune Publishing's top shareholder is now Michael Ferro

    Michael Ferro, majority owner of the Chicago Sun-Times, has become the largest shareholder in Chicago-based Tribune Publishing, parent company of the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and other major daily newspapers. Tribune Publishing sold more than 5.2 million shares of newly issued common stock to Merrick Media, a Chicago-based investment firm controlled by Ferro, in a $44.4 million deal announced Thursday.

    Among the winners, Tribune reporters David Jackson, Gary Marx and Duaa Eldeib were awarded best investigative reporting by a news service with a circulation of more than 250,000 for their "Harsh Treatment" series, which focused the shortcomings of residential treatment centers providing care for young wards of the state and disadvantaged children.

Their revelations about serious abuses in Illinois' juvenile justice system brought about reforms and led to the resignation of the director of the state Department of Children and Family Services.
