Fluidigm | Pivoting Location for Real Innovation

A: Innovation is pivotal in biological research as it's often what contributes to new scientific discoveries. There are many biological questions that are difficult to investigate due to technical limitations. Fluidigm has brought several breakthroughs to the scientific community. The C1™ system enables users to isolate and process 96 single cells in parallel.

  • Nearly two dozen South San Francisco Fluidigmers participated in the recent J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge, an annual, 3.5-mile running and walking event that serves as a global celebration of teamwork, camaraderie and community.

At the Sept. 6 San Francisco run, a sold-out crowd of 10,500 participants from 363 companies took part, braving typical Bay Area winds for the sunset start. Fluidigmers joined teams from a range of organizations, from major tech and pharma companies to universities and small businesses.

This new imaging system significantly expands the number of protein biomarkers that can be simultaneously detected from tissues and tumors as compared to results from standard fluorescent immunohistochemistry (IHC) methods.

  • Nature spotlights CyTOF as a technology to watch in 2018. Hear Elaine Mardis, PhD, from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital explain how mass cytometry could be used boost the development of cancer vaccines. “This technology could transform the field of cancer immunogenomics, by enabling researchers to work out which neo-antigens produced by an individual’s cancerous cells are the most abundant and most likely to elicit a strong reaction from the immune system. Researchers could then use that information to create personalized anti-cancer ‘vaccines’,” said Dr. Mardis.

    Technology to watch in 2018

Recoding the genome For all the excitement surrounding the gene-editing tool CRISPR, it is not that efficient or precise. It's hard to make many changes at once. My lab has set the record so far - making 62 modifications to the genome of a single cell - but we have compelling applications that need a greater number of simultaneous changes.
