    Herbert Smith Freehills has launched ground-breaking Global Transitioning Guidelines, affirming its commitment to transgender (trans*) employees. The Guidelines form a global policy framework to support employees as they transition, and to ensure that inclusion of trans* employees is acknowledged across the firm.

    The Guidelines provide guidance to the trans* individual regarding navigating their gender transition in the workplace, as well as a summary of gender diversity and identity terminology and definitions. These are an important part of the framework, as education is a key component of the firm’s ongoing commitment to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace.

    The Guidelines also provide practical guidance for human resources professionals and leaders within the firm, along with steps to create a transitioning support plan for individuals.

    Herbert Smith Freehills has been recognised for its ongoing commitment to gender equality in the workplace, receiving the Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation for the second consecutive year from Australia’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA).

    The citation recognises the firm’s proactive approach to addressing gender inequality, and the strategic initiatives the firm has undertaken to overcome the systemic imbalance between genders within its own workforce and as well as its contributions to the legal profession more broadly.

    In order to receive the citation, an organisation must demonstrate how they are improving gender equality outcomes across activity in a number of areas including leadership, learning and development, gender remuneration gaps and flexible working.

    Our new partners represent the firm's ongoing investment in its China business. Their arrival also responds to demand from our Chinese clients for international projects and projects disputes lawyers, especially for Belt and Road projects and investments.

    Herbert Smith Freehills has appointed Scott Balber to the role of Managing Partner of the firm's New York office, effective May 1, 2018. Scott will also remain the US Head of Investigations and Financial Services Litigation for the firm.

    Scott succeeds Thomas Riley, who is stepping down from the role he successfully held for more than five years, since the opening of the firm's New York office in September 2012. Tom was instrumental in establishing the firm's US presence and under his leadership the team in New York has doubled in size, with 11 partners and more than 30 lawyers and other fee-earners.

    A leading litigator with 25 years of experience, Scott joined Herbert Smith Freehills' New York office in 2013 to lead the firm's US-based corporate crime and investigations team – a strategic enhancement to the firm's highly-regarded global Corporate Crime and Investigations Practice.

    Herbert Smith Freehills today announced the re-appointment of James Palmer as Senior Partner and Chair of the Global LLP Council for a second term. The appointment, which follows a partnership vote, will take effect from 1 May 2018 for a term of three years.

    James is one of the UK's most highly regarded corporate lawyers and currently chairs TheCityUK's Legal Services Group and is a member of TheCityUK's Advisory Board and its Senior Brexit Steering Committee. He is also a member of the FCA's Markets Practitioner Panel.

    As Senior Partner he has continued to advise clients and lead transactions, and the substantial majority of his time going forward will continue to be spent with clients.

     Leading international law firm Herbert Smith Freehills announced today the promotion of 17 lawyers to its global partnership. The promotions take effect on 1 May, 2018.

    The appointments cover eight offices, with 10 partners based in Asia-Pacific and seven in the UK and US. Fourteen of this year's partner promotions are women.

    The new partners are focussed on supporting the firm's clients in core practices and sectors including: corporate; disputes; employment, pensions & incentives; finance, real estate and projects; competition, regulation and trade; mining; pharmaceuticals; technology, energy, construction, infrastructure, consumer and financial institutions.

    Leading global law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has announced a major investment in asset finance, with the hire of four partners in London and Singapore.

    Rex Rosales and Jahnavi Ramachandran will join the firm in London, while Siva Subramaniam and Samuel Kolehmainen will join in Singapore.

    "With unprecedented investment levels in aviation and other transport, infrastructure and projects across the globe, strengthening our asset finance practice makes good business sense for us and our clients," said Jason Ricketts, Global Head of Finance, Real Estate and Projects.

    "A key strength they will bring is aviation finance where they are amongst the leading practitioners in the market. They will complement our tier one asset finance practice in Australia, making the firm's offering in this sector a truly global practice and mirroring the global market."

  • Herbert Smith Freehills to Open Business Hub in Canary Wharf

    17 May 2018 | London

    Herbert Smith Freehills will open a new office in Canary Wharf, transitioning part of its London workforce to a new hub in the business district.

    The move will see around 495 members of staff relocate to the new office, on Bank Street, in September 2018.

    The new hub will be the primary workplace for the majority of the firm’s London Business Services staff and the firm's London Alternative Legal Services (ALT) team. The space will be designed to encourage agile working and collaboration and the new office will also be able to be utilised by lawyers, clients and colleagues from other offices.

    Herbert Smith Freehills Chief Executive Officer Mark Rigotti believes the new space will, "empower people to move away from traditional office-based ways of working, shaping the business for the future."

    Late last year, the firm announced that it would be transitioning part of its Sydney workforce to a new office in Macquarie Park. The office opened in April 2018.

  • Herbert Smith Freehills signs up to UN Standards of Conduct for Business on tackling discrimination against LGBTI people

    International law firm Herbert Smith Freehills has signed the UN Standards of Conduct for LGBTI inclusion, making a commitment to supporting a culture of respect and equality in the workplace and the communities in which it operates.

    Drawing on good practice, the United Nations standards set out actions companies can take to protect the rights of LGBTI individuals. These include eliminating workplace discrimination; making sure business operations do not contribute to discrimination against customers, suppliers or members of the public; and working with business partners to address discriminatory practices up and down the supply chain.

    The standards also encourage companies to stand up for the rights of LGBT people in the countries where they operate – including through advocacy and support for local organisations.
