We recently published our Fiscal 2023 Sustainability Report, Where Change Begins. The report details our work to advance the circular economy through the recovery, reuse, and recycling of the essential metals required to support global decarbonization efforts. It also showcases progress toward our multi-year sustainability goals, including achieving our greenhouse gas emissions reduction target - two years ahead of schedule. “Nearly 10 years ago, we created a sustainability framework based on three pillars: People, Planet, and Profit. This framework is the foundation of our sustainability strategy and continues to deliver meaningful impact to all our stakeholders,” said Tamara Lundgren, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Last week alongside Tacoma City Councilmember, Kristina Walker and several members of the Tacoma Public Utilities Board, Schnitzer CEO, Tamara Lundgren helped to officially open a new public sales area at our Tacoma, Washington metals recycling facility. By offering a dedicated area for members of the public to drop off appliances, used aluminum beverage containers, and ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metal, Schnitzer teams help to keep more materials out of the landfill, conserve energy and natural resources, and expand our environmental services to the Tacoma community. The event also highlighted Schnitzer’s participation in Tacoma Public Utilities’ Evergreen Options Program, which provides the facility with electricity from majority carbon-free hydroelectricity. We look forward to continuing to build on this important partnership to achieve our shared sustainability goals and support the Tacoma community.
Schnitzer teams celebrated Earth Day by participating in park and street cleanups, tree plantings, outdoor beautification, drain markings and other projects that promote environmental preservation in the communities where we operate. Employees used Volunteer Time Off hours to participate in Earth Day events as we advance our Company sustainability goal to donate 10,000 volunteer hours by 2025.
