Did you know that November 18th is the International Day of LGBTQIA+ People in STEM? The date marks the anniversary of the day that former US Army Astronomer Frank Kameny's appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court. Kameny had been fired from his position and permanently banned from federal employment due to his status as a gay man. Although unsuccessful, Frank's case is the first known civil rights claim based on sexual orientation pursued in a U.S. court and is considered a significant moment in the history of LGBTQ+ civil rights in America. 61 years later, LGBTQ+ people remain underrepresented in STEM and face harassment and discrimination in STEM workplaces at a disproportionate rate. Many choose to conceal their identity in the workplace out of fear. Revamp Engineering is committed to building a community where everyone feels comfortable and respected as their authentic self regardless of their LGBTQ+ identity and today we want to recognize and celebrate the important presence and contributions of LGBTQ+ people across all #STEM disciplines.
