The Best Cities for Jobs in 2018

As popular metros like San Francisco, New York City and Los Angeles continue to boom — both in terms of residents and traffic congestion — many assume that these are the hottest spots for jobs as well. Sure, they may have cool jobs and enviable skylines, but surprisingly they do not top this year’s list of best cities for jobs.

Glassdoor’s Best Cities for Jobs in 2018 report is out and ranks the top U.S. cities according to their Glassdoor City Score, a figure determined by weighing three factors equally: how easy it is to get a job, how affordable it is to live there and how satisfied employees are working there.* As it turns out, the midsized metros are home to the top five best cities for jobs. That’s right, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Hartford top the list.

Why? The big, metropolitan cities in the U.S. have well-known brands and attract attention from around the world, but this star factor has also made them expensive places to live. As such, job seekers might be missing out on the potential benefits of a lot of midsize cities.

Here are the top five best cities for jobs this year and some of the best companies hiring in each metro. Whether you’re in finance or food service, construction or consulting, healthcare or hospitality, there are exciting jobs in each of these cities. Start your job search today!
