Best Cities for Jobs in 2020

BestCities Blog Hero

If you were to ask a friend, “What are the best cities for jobs today,”  you may hear responses like “San Francisco,” “New York City,” and “Chicago.” And sure, they may have cool jobs and enviable skylines, but surprisingly they are not the best cities for jobs.

Glassdoor’s Best Cities for Jobs in 2020 report is out and ranks the top U.S. cities according to their Glassdoor City Score, a figure determined by weighing three factors equally: how easy it is to get a job, how affordable it is to live there and how satisfied employees are working there.* As it turns out, the midsized metros are home to the top five best cities for jobs. That’s right, Raleigh, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Memphis and Cleveland top the list.

Why? Many of these mid-sized cities like Pittsburgh and Austin are growing tech hubs with a healthy number of open jobs and much more affordable housing prices compared to bigger tech hubs like NYC and San Francisco.  Major cities including San Francisco, New York City, and Los Angeles did not make the list this year primarily due to the high cost of living associated with these cities. While these metro areas have some of the highest salaries and are home to a wide variety of tech companies, the home values in these cities generally outpace the earning potential.

Here are the top five best cities for jobs this year and some of the best companies hiring in each metro. Whether you’re in finance or food service, construction or consulting, healthcare or hospitality, there are exciting jobs in each of these cities. Start your job search today!
