Highest Paying Medical Jobs

The medical field is a thriving and evolving landscape. The healthcare industry continues to grow, driven by the ongoing and increasing need for services. The Bureau of Labor Statics (BLS) Reports: “Employment of healthcare occupations is projected to grow 18 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 2.4 million new jobs. Healthcare occupations are projected to add more jobs than any of the other occupational groups. This projected growth is mainly due to an aging population, leading to greater demand for healthcare services.”

These are great jobs that blend the technical and the interpersonal. In fact, 20 percent of Glassdoor’s 25 Highest Paying Jobs in America, including the top three highest paying jobs, are healthcare-related. In the same way, more than 15 percent of the 50 Best Jobs in America for 2019 are in the healthcare industry.

Physician

The term “physician” refers to a professional’s broad medical skills and awareness. When practitioners become credentialed physicians, that means they can meet with and diagnosis patients, advises them about their health, wellness and choices. Plus, they can treat ailments, illnesses and emergencies. According to Explorehealthcareers.org, physicians generally chose a specialty like family medicine or orthopedics. They then spend their careers treating patients whose needs are associated with that specialty.

Pharmacy Manager

Pharmacy managers are pharmacists who oversee and manages operations. Candidates often get promoted from within to earn the role leading operations at the pharmacy.

Pharmacist

In addition to dispatching prescriptions, pharmacists also assist patients by answering their healthcare-related questions. Explorehealthcareers.org summarizes some of the nuances of this vital profession: “The pharmacist is an accessible liaison whom patients can talk to face-to-face, without an appointment. He or she is someone who can answer health-related questions — what foods, drinks, activities, or other drugs could have an effect on medication or what to do about a missed dose. Essentially, pharmacists help people with almost anything related to the use of medicines, which means they help people to stay as healthy as possible.”

Physician Assistant (PA)

PAs have plenty of autonomy in their careers, and do much the same work as physicians, thought they have different credentials. Explorehealthcareers.org describes physicians assistants as “medical providers who are licensed to diagnose and treat illness and disease and to prescribe medication for patients.”

Glassdoor salary range: $77,000-$120,000

Nurse Practitioner (NP)

NPs have a similar role to PAs. Nursinglicensure.org explains: “NPs and PAs sometimes compete for the same positions. . . Even when they perform similar functions, nurse practitioners and physician assistants draw from different traditions; they are educated in separate schools or departments. . .  The PA tradition draws more from a medical model. The NP model of course draws from the nursing tradition, one that has traditionally included a whole person and wellness approach.”

Occupational therapist (OT)

OTs work with a wide range of patients, helping them to recover skills they may have lost due to injury or illness. OTs helps patients reclaim their strength, skills and autonomy.

Speech language pathologist

Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) evaluate, diagnose and treat language, speech, communication and swallowing issues and disorders. They can do a wide range of jobs, assisting children to elderly patients. SLPs can work in a facility or in private practices.

Glassdoor salary range: $49,000-$93,000

Dental hygienist

Dental hygienists clean and evaluate patient’s oral health. They also enact some dental procedures and x-rays. This role is rewarding, versatile and in-demand across the country.

Physical therapist (PT)

PTs help patients recover their strength and abilities by enacting physical treatments that address the root causes of pain. PTs evaluate and diagnose patient issues, and then work with patients to create and implement a treatment plan.
