What is a Nursing Manager?

A nursing manager is responsible for promoting and restoring patients' health by developing day-to-day management and long-term planning of the patient care area. They direct and develop staff collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary professional staffs and provide physical and psychological support for patients, friends, and families. Additionally, nurse managers maintain nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures. Nurse managers usually work in nursing homes, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities.

A Masters degree in Nursing is preferred along with 5 years' nursing experience is required for nurse manager positions. A current RN License in the residing state is also required. Successful nurse managers are able to work efficiently under time constraints and possess strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a large team.

Responsibilities for Nursing Manager

  • Maintain nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures
  • Adopt and implement innovative nursing practices to improve our facility
  • Identify patient service requirements by establishing personal rapport with potential and actual patients and other persons in a position to understand service requirements
  • Recruit, select and guide nursing staff
  • Manage nursing operations by initiating, coordinating, and enforcing program, operational, and personnel policies and procedures
  • Support nursing staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees

  • Provide information to patients and health care team by answering questions and requests

Qualifications for Nursing Manager

  • 5+ years' nursing experience
  • Current RN License in the state
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills and ability to work collaboratively with a large team
  • Able to work efficiently under time constraints
  • Able to lift 50 pounds
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Able to interview nurses for open positions
