Engaging employees in the day-to-day business is one of those tasks that seems simple but actually requires quite a bit of effort. People often think it just takes a few changes or conversations to turn people’s attitudes around, but it is so much more than that. In fact, it requires a complete mind shift to move from employees simply going through the motions to feeling passionate about their jobs and caring about the success of the company. One of the best ways to begin this shift is to boost employee morale within your organization. Boosting employee morale can raise your company’s productivity, reduce turnover and give you more satisfied employees overall.

First and foremost, you must be consistent in you efforts. This may not seem “unique,” but the story I tell here is much more common than consistent dedication to boosting morale. In one of the companies I worked for early in my career, we had certain members of our executive team who would get really fired up about boosting employee morale…once every six months. They wanted employees to feel great about working for the organization but they only wanted to put that into action when something would come up that made it apparent that we should do something for our employees. Employees appreciated the periodic gestures but there was a missing component: consistency. It was almost as if we were boosting morale in a reactive way rather than proactively. High employee morale means that employees are consistently engaged, so that when challenges do arise, employees care to see the organization through it successfully.
Employee Decision Making
One of the most significant perks you can offer to employees is to give them the power to weigh in on or even make decisions that will affect them. Whether it’s an employee committee or better yet an opportunity for all employees to vote, it’s a powerful thing (and surprisingly uncommon) to say to employees, “I trust you enough to make this decision.” When you offer employees this opportunity, make sure they are informed of all aspects of the decision they are making and be transparent from start to finish.
Let Them Give Back
Empowering employees to make a difference in their community can actually give you more satisfied and well-rounded employees, which translates to higher productivity. Whether you organize company-wide community service activities or offer time off to volunteer at the organization of their choice, it will be a worthwhile investment.
Care About What They Care About
For most of your employees, the most important things in their life have nothing to do with work. The majority of people care most about their friends and family, so if you want to know the quickest way to earn their loyalty, care about what they care about. The way you do this can vary greatly, from offering a way for people to show off their loved ones, either with photos or at events, to showing you appreciate the support they offer your employees. For instance, one hotel company sends flowers to the loved ones of employees who have to work overtime as a token of their appreciation. It’s amazing how doing something for employees’ loved ones will have a direct affect on employee morale.
Skip The Trust-Building Activity
Team building is an important part of developing relationships and chemistry at work but ice-breaker team building activities are so 1998. Think about where you enjoy spending time with friends and family and develop comparable team building activities for employee groups. Just because it would also make a great date or birthday activity doesn’t mean employees can’t bond there. Check out activities like the popular wine and painting classes and outdoor adventures. The less cheesy the activity, the more employees will focus on bonding and not on how long they have to be there.
