The Health Information Management (HIM) at Mason Health has an excellent leadership opportunity for Coding Supervisor. This exempt, full-time (FTE = 1.0) position typically works 40 hours per week (8-hour shifts, M - F). This hybrid (onsite & remote) position is responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of Mason Health. Serves as a resource to all coders, Revenue Cycle, Business Office, and providers. This position helps to foster staff development, satisfaction, and achievement. This role will support cross-training current coding staff in all areas. This role will act as a resource for coding personnel and the HIM Director. This position will also develop standard coding policies for all areas as well as monitor the quality and productivity of the Mason Health coding.

Ultimately, the following duties serve to ensure Mason General Hospital and Family of Clinics is properly reimbursed for the services it provides through efficient accurate, timely coding and clean claim creation.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

Supports the facilitation of – This includes distributing workloads or work queues, making adjustments to staff allocation as needed, provides guidance on the organizational policies and procedures, and promoting compliance of organizational goals and standards

Supervise and coordinate all activities of coding specialists). Analyze workload on a daily basis and distribute workload to support HIM department and Mason Health key performance indicators (KPI)

Effectively utilize ICD-10, CPT/HCPCS and related materials to investigate coding issues and produce accurate results

Maintains up-to-date knowledge and provides guidance on requirements set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), other third-party payer requirements, the American Hospital Association (AHA) Official Coding guidelines, and American Medical Association’s (AMA) and communicates this information to staff

Serves as a resource to professional coders, the health information management department, and the patient financial services department, regarding coding questions and documentation requirements/guidelines

Provides educational sessions or events as well as acts as a mentor to newly hired coders, including but not limited to the involvement in the job shadowing segment of training and addressing arising questions

Based on these duties, the supervisor also provides recommendations to HIM leadership about potentially necessary adjustments to staffing levels, workflow processes, policies, and technology

Conduct system testing, provide feedback and support conversions/implementations on coding and charge entry issues.

Works with the denials management team in identifying root causes of occurring denials

Work with PFS team to identify and resolve problem accounts

Conduct random coding audits of coding staff to ensure coding accuracy

Monitors coding staff productivity and reports this information to the HIM Director

Track and trend coding quality and coding productivity; work with coding staff to achieve established benchmarks; provide re-training and education where needed

Responsible for development and implementation fo a CDI program

Works with HIM Director in evaluations of the coding team and other administrative duties as assigned

Draft hospital-specific Coding Guidelines; review and up-date guidelines annually

Required Education and Experience

Minimum Associate of Science degree in Health Information Technology

Five to seven years of previous coding experience including inpatient, outpatient and clinic specialty preferred

At least three years of experience in a supervisory role in HIM preferred

Demonstrated experience motivating and leading a team through substantial change preferred

Required Licenses, Certifications and/or Registrations

Currently credential as either a RHIA, RHIT, CPC and/or CCS certifications with coding experience (as noted above) is required and must be maintained
