Position: Engine Field Service Technician – Marine, Industrial and Petroleum Power Systems
Primary Objective of the Position:
This position is responsible for field service support of our Caterpillar Marine, Industrial and Petroleum Engines and Diesel and Natural Gas Electric Power Generation product line. Duties will include the maintenance and troubleshooting of engine and electrical related systems, start-up of engines / generators and coordination with marine gears, compressors, and /or switchgear systems.
Major Areas of Accountability:
Provide customer support for marine, industrial and petroleum power engines through technical evaluations of specific application, troubleshooting, and problem solving.
Repair and maintain reciprocating engine based standby power systems, marine, industrial and petroleum power systems throughout the United States.
Provide guidance, assistance, and training to service technicians and customers as requested.
Explain and defend warranty decisions; generate and communicate service bulletins to both Customers and Engineering.
Communicate cost, service and reliability issues from Field to Engineering with intent of convincing appropriate departments for cost reduction and design improvements
Write full reports on findings from field service events, with clear, concise information.
Communicate daily clear comprehensive field reports regarding assigned units.
Represent the Power Systems group in the field.
Maintain service manuals.
Experience with Diesel Engines, Spark Ignited Engines, Electrical Switchgear, Diesel/Electric Systems related components.
Good working knowledge of marine engine components, proper alignment techniques, marine gear components, gas compression systems, power electronics, electronic controls, and fuel systems.
Experienced with diesel and natural gas engine service, repair, top end and major overhauls including but not limited to the following:
Valve and bridge adjustments
Cylinder head replacement and head internals
Wet liner removal and installation
Cylinder honing and measurement
Counter bore engine, installing new spacer plate
Crankshaft web deflection measurement
Camshaft bearing replacement
Pre-combustion chamber adjustments
Water, fuel, and oil pump inspection and replacement
Fuel injector adjustment, trim, and replacement
Fuel system and governor adjustment
Filter cutting and examination
Bottom end bearing replacement
Turbo and cartridge inspection and replacement
Torsional coupling mounting and alignment
Exhaust gas bypass repair and alignment
Air starter and electrical starter servicing
12 VDC and 24 VDC electrical system troubleshooting and repair
Use of Cat ET
Caterpillar Marine PAR Certification is preferred but not required.
Working knowledge of and experience with the following Cat engine models, both D & G series:
300 series 6.25 bore
3600 & C280
Excellent at managing customer relationships
High level of responsiveness, and a strong proactive attitude to problem solving
Ability and motivation to learn quickly.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Desire and aptitude to perform hands-on work.
Willing to locate regionally
Field Service Experience in a fast pace environment.

Use of hands and fingers to operate telephone(s) and computer(s) and specialized tools
Communication with internal and external customers, generally oral and written
Ability to travel to job-sites (may be out of town)
Movement in and around the job-site
Own personal hand tools sufficient for tasks described above (PPS provides special tooling)
Machines/Tools Used on the Job:
Various hand tools, specialized meters and diagnostic tools.
Personal Computer, Microsoft Office Suite, Email, and Peripherals
Comprehension of Caterpillar ET and other software tools
Company Service Vehicle
High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Two (2) years of Marine Engine field experience or accepted alternate
- Technical Degree or Certification a plus
Microsoft Office Software proficiency
Able to read electrical schematics and equipment mechanical drawings
Supervision of Others:
Indirect, will work with other Service Technicians and Project Managers to coordinate resource commitments and provide our customers timely, accurate and professional service.
