At Bowers & Wilkins, we are looking to recruit a Senior Transducer Engineer focused on transducer design for our high performance active and passive loudspeaker systems.
This is an opportunity to become part of the highly dynamic and multicultural Bowers & Wilkins R&D team, based in Southwater, West Sussex. The relocation of our Research & Engineering establishment represents a significant investment to expand the team and accelerate the company’s ability to develop new capabilities that will drive innovation across its suite of luxury home speakers, headphones and performance car audio.
As Senior Transducer Engineer you will be working with our product development, production engineer and QA teams, providing your technical expertise in simulation and measurements techniques and assisting them during both pre-production and production phases. This varied role requires occasional far east travel to support our China based production site, up to 8 weeks a year.
In this role, you will lead the transducer team (2 junior engineers) which is actively involved in the design and development of new transducers and work closely with our product engineers to achieve best in class acoustic performance. The role will cover all aspects of transducer design, from theoretical simulation, to prototyping, measurements and subjective evaluation.
Excellent report writing, and presentation skills will be essential in supporting this work. It also requires hands-on, practical skills to support the assessment of transducers and fault finding at all stages of the production process. As part of the wider engineering team you will also be expected to undertake research and development of new and innovative transducer technologies.
Duties & Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Head of research, the senior transducer engineer leads the transducer team which support the following research and development activities:
Transducer design (excluding CAD work) Transducer component design (excluding CAD work) Support to transducer manufacturing sites in terms of assembling processes and quality control supervision Development of new simulation and measurement methods with the aim of improving speed of delivery, simulation accuracy and sonic performance Support of other B&W teams on measurement techniques and measurement specifications Specific tasks and responsibilities, either individually or as a team:
Finite element simulation of components or assemblies (electromagnetic, mechanical or acoustics) Measurements of transducer loudspeaker assemblies using the Klippel system and other systems currently available at B&W Document all above results, including the creation of working procedures and design guidelines Implementation of design processes and testing procedures for transducer components Competitor products evaluation Mentoring of Engineers on the use of simulation and measurement tools Support production engineering (PE) teams on assembling processes (jig design, glue choice, online subassembly quality control definition etc.) Support QA teams on test definition (end of line, power tests, DVT matrix), equipment choices, drive unit fault finding Perform any other technical duties as assigned These tasks will involve interfacing with the following teams:
Product development, workshop and drawing office, factories in Worthing & Zhuhai (China), quality assurance & production engineering.
Educated to degree level or equivalent in acoustics, physics or electronic engineering. 5 years of experience developing electrodynamic transducers from specification to mass production Understanding of physical principles of electrodynamic transducers, including non-linear effects Extensive knowledge of the COMSOL finite element package (or equivalent) Working knowledge of the Klippel R&D and Klippel QC systems Experienced in transducer components and assemblies manufacturing processes Ability to effectively communicate within a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural context Strong drive to drive projects to completion Able to create and present test reports in a logical and accurate manner
