Enphase Energy is a leading provider of distributed, AC-coupled energy storage systems. Our first modular AC coupled storage system was introduced in 2016.
As the Sr Systems Engineer – Battery, the successful candidate will lead the evaluation, selection and qualification of new cells and cell packs for the energy storage solutions. This role requires hands-on experience with battery technologies, in particular, lithium ion batteries.
In this role the successful candidate will:
Lead the selection and qualification process of new cell technologies and manufacturers, based on product quality, cost and performance requirements, for use in energy storage applications
Perform characterization of new cells and new cell technologies to be used in Enphase’s energy storage solutions.
Lead the requirement management process for cells and cell packs. This involves communicating directly with the cell / cell pack suppliers when needed. Domestic and international travel is expected too.
Participate in the definition of safety functions performed by the BMS and the system for the safe operation of energy storage products. This includes contribution to DFMEA analysis.
Investigate new technologies for energy storage and work with the CTO team in their definition of the technological roadmap.
To be successful in this role, the candidate will need to have:
MS or higher degree in chemical, material science, electrical engineering or electrochemistry, plus 2 or more years relevant work experience in the field of Li-Ion battery / battery pack research or development. Alternatively, undergraduate degree in the fields mentioned with 5+ years relevant work experience.
Deep understanding of the electro-chemical fundamentals of lithium ion cell operation.
Deep understanding of the various lithium ion technologies, including pros and cons, raw materials used, availability…etc
Understanding of market availability and cost trends of lithium ion battery materials.
Strong hands on experience in evaluating, testing and analyzing cells and cell packs (including tear down). This includes the ability to perform lab and chamber long tests.
Strong modeling and simulation capabilities of electrical cell models for predicting electrical behavior and capacity fade.
Good understanding of thermal models of Li-Ion cells.
Excellent communication skills.
The ability to generate high quality technical reports and presentations based on the work performed.
Desired experience – the following will be an advantage:
Experience with new technologies like solid state batteries and fuel cells
Experience with renewable energy systems, including codes and standards for ESS.
Up to 30% domestic and international travel.
