The New School Buildings Dept., which directs all aspects of Design, Construction, and Facilities Management throughout campus, is hiring a sustainability-initiatives assistant to help with the research, coordination, and implementation of ongoing energy, water, and waste-reduction efforts. This is a part-time position for the 2016/2017 academic year.
The University has committed to becoming carbon neutral by the year 2040, with an interim goal through the NYC Mayor’s Office of reducing carbon emissions by 35% between 2014 and 2025. Meeting these goals requires substantial ongoing investments in building systems, equipment, staff training, behavior modification, and community leadership. Current work includes lighting retrofits, water-fixture replacements, HVAC upgrades, and operational improvements at the LEED Gold University Center.
Among a range of tasks, the Sustainability-Initiatives Assistant will help coordinate ongoing projects, complete campus-wide studies and surveys, research new methods of improving our carbon footprint and help facilitate operational changes within our community. The successful candidate will be exposed to many diverse aspects of energy and sustainability, and will not only actively take part in ongoing solutions, but will learn by working with other engineers and architects on the team, and among departments across campus. While the position is focused on sustainability, some tasks may be assigned that pertain more broadly to the Buildings Dept. operations, writing, etc.
- Federal Work Study required
- Consistent availability between 10 and 20hrs per week
- Comfortable working with data/MS Excel
- Some graphic design experience (creating posters/signs)
- Familiarity with general building systems, energy-efficiency principles
- Willingness to interface with other departments on campus
- Curiosity, timeliness, attentive to varying demands
- Technical writing or editorial experience
