Am I going to be worked to the bone if I join a group where I’d be the only associate supporting partners and counsels? It’s a subgroup of a corporate practice that focuses on a specialized area with great exit options and operates as a support group for other transactional and/or lit groups (like tax or IP). It’s a newly created position meaning there aren’t any previous associates that I can ask about their experience. I really like type of work the team does but worried about being miserable.

I’ve been at a firm for 6 months. The group I work w/ is huge. I report directly to a Sr FA. I’m very good at strategy - I have Asperger’s . I see patterns, #’s etc. What I struggle w/ is emotional intelligence, I don’t understand sarcasm, etc. I notice that the FA, takes all the credit for my work. I come up w/ ideas but don’t know how to articulate that to the group so this jerk runs w/ it. He presents it like, I had Mark do this, etc. How do I approach this?

What kind of jobs do folks in this group have? What kind of companies, organizations, and law firms (with as much specificity as you’d like)? I do environmental work in big law (mostly project siting and related litigation, but also some deal work). I am looking to pivot. I am interested in doing regulatory compliance for a company or some sort of environmental consulting group, but I’m also curious to see what else is out there. Thank you!

How to pick practice area? Transactional associate going to start soon. Really torn on what to do practice group wise. Options are Cap Markets, Funds, M&A, Real Estate. Also curious about Exec Comp. Know I didn’t love funds work over the summer but everything else I haven’t had enough exposure to. Firm has big real estate group and is strong across the board in transactional work. Anything in particular I should be considering?

Any advice on how to switch into L&E. Previously was a junior corporate attorney in big law who was laid off mid last year and has had difficulty getting a new corporate role. I'm now trying to retool into a practice group l am more interested in. How do I go about it? I think making the switch will be worth it in the long run for my career. Based in Chicago but considering moving to NY this year

I have always felt that the ACT and SAT were more about showing you could handle a specific kind of test than they were about preparing you for college. They seemed like a tool for schools and scholarship committees to filter applicants. Did you find that the skills you needed to pass the test were the same ones you needed to succeed in your college classes? Share your thoughts.

How to deal with a practice group that consistently rewards slackers and punishes the associates that are actually doing the work? Sick and tired of busting my ass while associates in my class year are paid the same amount to work 3-500+ fewer billable hours per year and are staffed on easy matters with more junior support just because they SUCK.

I’ve applied for a London aCTM role (PhD required) a few months ago at MedPace, and haven’t heard back. The role is still active on the website. Does it just take a while or have I been already passed over? If anyone can give any ideas on the timeline, I’d be so grateful! I’m looking to do a full career switch, so I’m not sure how the clinical trial hiring process goes!

If a small specialized lit group gets poached by another firm, is it bad to join their group at the already-established firm they went to? They are building it out at the established firm and looking for associates at other firms for now, but not sure if folks have experience with that. Seems like a good way to pivot into a specialty, but worry about the risk too.
