      Ask A Recruiter - Law

I’m a senior litigation associate in NYC biglaw. We’re expecting our first baby later this year and once the baby is born, we’d like to relocate to Cleveland to be closer to family. What’s the best way to go about locating a new position in Cleveland BigLaw? I get tons of recruiter emails for NY, DC, CA, etc. but none for smaller Midwest markets and am struggling to find recruiters who place attorneys in Ohio. Do I just cold apply to these firms? Start emailing alumni that work there?

I use an ATS that assigns a percent of qualification to each candidate. It scans each resume for us and uses that information to place candidates in a recommended category. Most of the time I still look through all the resumes just in case. However, a lot of times there are people that are no where near qualified for the role, and I was wondering if anyone else would just ignore this category all together? It is a time suck if the quality of candidate is just not there.

How does the summer internship recruiting outcome look this year? I’m at M7 and recruited for IB but didn’t receive an offer. Transitioning into IB was the primary reason I decided to do an MBA, and since it’s impossible to recruit for full-time IB without a summer internship, I’m feeling really stuck. It feels like the entire MBA experience depends on whether you have an internship lined up.

I just recently took an Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ) Test due to mild concerns over the past few months that I might be on the autism spectrum and I scored a 26 on it. According to the test, scores in the 26-32 range indicate some Autistic traits (Asperger's Syndrome). / If I wanted to get professionally evaluated for it, how would I go about doing so?

I want to rotate between clinical and research tracks (e.g. clinician‑investigator) but I am worried how my interests look to recruiters. How will recruiters assess my hybrid aspiration? Are they supportive or skeptical? Which elements do they look for to ensure balance is realistic? I would love to work on those elements to succeed in my career.

Any recommendations for tax-focused recruiters who have successfully placed associates into BigLaw tax groups? I’m a NY-barred tax associate at a Big 4 national office, post-Tax LLM, exploring junior tax associate opportunities at law firms. If you know recruiters or firms that may be open right now, would appreciate a DM.

The 2026 ATS update is brutal. Most people don't realize that even 'clean' resumes are getting flagged if the keyword density isn't tuned to the new LLM filters. I've been auditing a few for free lately just to see the data—it's wild how many 10/10 candidates are getting auto-rejected for formatting.

A colleague of mine just got an IT certificate from Cornell and now their LinkedIn network says Cornell, even though their MBA is from a terrible school. Why do people do this all the time with certifications that are from Ivy League schools? It’s so ridiculous and annoying. 😂

This YouTube video is the best explanation I have found regarding resumes and ATS myths. I have been sharing this information with my mentees for a while, so I hope it helps clear all the confusion and answers questions. Be aware of resume writing scams. https://youtu.be/nUlomY7RsIg?si=z8VTTXa_deMNMl9H
