Hi, I got a rejection from BCG despite a partner referral. While I am aware that it is a meritocratic process overall, I just wanted to understand how much competition I’d likely was against? The role was Sr. Associate/Consultant – experienced hire in London. I did not even get an assessment/first round, just a simple “Application not selected” on the portal. Background: 3.3 years in a Big4 in India in their financial services consulting vertical. Just wrapped up my MFin from Cambridge Judge

I have been shortlisted many times here in Ottawa for L&D, as a trainer and/or instructional design. I have got a lot of experience. IDK if the problem is me, or the fact that the competition is indeed high; however, it is sometimes hard to compete as I have been unemployed for a year as I had to take care of my baby and the moving to another country that we've done. Any insights about this? I always ask the recruiter about their feedback and what I can improve, but their answer is always safe.

As I interview for new job opportunities, I am struck by the phrase "competitive salary" during negotiations but competitive with what exactly? The market? The role? The cost of living? Or just whoever accepted the lowest offer last time? I find what it often translates to is: “Tell us what you’re earning now, we’ll add a couple of grand and hope you don’t notice you’re still 10% under market value.” Competitive salary without context is just noise dressed up as confidence. Thoughts?

Has anyone here ever successfully used a competing offer to get a counter from their current employer? I’m sitting on an offer that’s about 15% higher, but truthfully, I’d prefer to stay where I am. I like my team, the culture’s solid, and I’m finally in a good rhythm. I just don’t feel like my comp reflects the value I’m bringing. I’ve never tried to negotiate with leverage like this before...how do you do it without burning bridges or looking disloyal?

I walked into my current healthcare role expecting teamwork, but instead it feels like we are all competing for recognition, better shifts, and who looked the busiest. When I really think about it, we all work the same unit, and care for the same patients, yet the environment feels more competitive than collaborative. Do you think healthy competition at work actually improves performance, or does it quietly create tension? Ever been in a situation like mine, how did you handle it?

Got poached by a competitor offering 20% more base and a much better comp structure. I gave my manager a chance to match it, and he hit me with “we don’t negotiate under pressure” line. So I left. I used to think a strong offer could spark a real conversation about value, but now I’m wondering if that play is dead. Is using competing offers to raise your comp even effective anymore, or does it just fast-track your exit?

I work in a creative agency, and I heard someone from the art team make comments about the team I lead (the copy team) on how poorly skilled we are compared to them. First of all, I don't agree with that one bit, and secondly, I don't enjoy knowing there's unnecessary rivalry between two teams who are supposed to actively work with each other towards the same goal. Would you let it be or try to be the arbitrator and fix this?

I have an offer for a $50k raise at a direct competitor, but my current contract has a pretty aggressive non-compete clause. I know the laws are changing, but the threat of a lawsuit is still hovering over my head. My current company is known for being litigious, even though I'm just a mid-level rep. Is a $200k OTE worth the potential legal headache, or should I look in a different vertical entirely?

I'm looking to invest in crypto, and I get that Bitcoin has the biggest lead. But with all the talk about new technology and AI, what's to stop a competitor from coming along with a better design? If a new coin emerges with, say, twice the supply and a faster, more efficient network, couldn't that make Bitcoin's value tank? I know it's a long shot, but how much of a risk is it, really?
