I have paid to get into networking events, had wonderful conversations, joined exclusive Discord channels, gotten recommendations to be put on agency rosters, and I get crickets. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Is there some kind of magical touch to getting freelance clients that I'm totally missing? Frankly I'm kind of over the idea of freelancing after all the effort I've put into "networking"

How does one network if they have no current network? I didn’t do it in school because I was very unsociable in general and tended to avoid speaking to people. Never had much confidence since it’s just my personality. Got by despite it, but now hiring is so brutal it seems impossible to get a job without knowing someone. I mostly worked at small companies where no one ever leaves, so now struggle to figure this all out almost 10 years into my career.
