      Fraud and Forensics

      Manager
      3mo

I am a director at a large top tier forensics shop (think FTI, A&M, AP). Rapidly promoted, strong reviews, highly recognized/supported by partners, & given tons of leadership/client relationship/step-up opportunities. However, I’m likely 5-10 years out from partnership. I’m being scouted by a headhunter from a small, specialized single-niche boutique for a direct admit to partnership. 10% bump quickly scaling to 60%. But nowhere near partner pay at my current firm. Would you consider it?

Last week I was let go from partner atty because of a Zoom link that didn't work for him. We don't use zoom at this firm we weren't trained on it also. Previous firms that I worked for didn't use Zoom so I didn't have 2 much experience with zoom, I did get him a link and a log in host information, but he was unable to get on. I've been at this firm for almost 3 years & now they I'm not doing a good job. He is a bully & so is the lead secretary. He treats others like they are beneath him.

Seeking advice. I’m a fifth year in a small, niche group that took on a new counsel ~6 months ago. He clearly has partnership ambitions, but hasn’t managed to port any work over at all. As a result, he’s become incredibly grabby, trying to wrestle client contact from associates, squeezing associates out of BD events etc. I am fed up. The other associates are fed up. But, I’m not sure if a complaint to a partner would do anything. Do partners even care about this kind of stuff?

I'm thrilled to share my experience with Everise! I'm about to start my new journey with this incredible company, and I'm excited to share why I wholeheartedly recommend them. From the moment I applied, the hiring team was supportive and helpful throughout the entire process. They guided me through each step, ensuring I had everything I needed to succeed. The interview process was smooth and professional, and I appreciated the opportunity to showcase my skills and experience.

Has anyone made partner and then wished that they had pushed for Of Counsel instead? I’m getting to the stage in my career when I need to pick a path and the decision seems to be between more money/power/prestige (partner) and more work life balance (counsel). Would love to hear insights from people who have navigated this decision before (and yes I’m assuming that partnership would be an option for me even though I don’t know that to be 100% true). Thanks!

Currently a very senior associate at a V50, but have the opportunity to go to a V5 with a partner mentor as partner-track counsel. Partnership at current firm would likely happen in a bit over a year. It seems like a more secure opportunity, but perhaps not given that one of my main backing partners is leaving. Transactional practice with a focus on an en vogue asset class. Am I crazy to consider leaving a “sure thing” shot at partnership for a counsel position?

The Partner title is starting to look like a pyramid scheme for people who hate sleep. I’ve been watching the junior partners at my firm lately, and they seem even more miserable and sleep-deprived than the associates. They’re still billing 2,000+ hours, but now they also have to spend every weekend networking and begging for business just to stay relevant. Has anyone here intentionally chosen the Senior Counsel path to avoid the partner life?

Hello! Being a senior manager in consulting has always been challenging and based on market trends, the path to partner is harder each year. I’m launching a coaching circle for Sr Managers in professional services who are deciding if they are doubling down on Partner track or if they are considering a pivot. If you are keen to learn more, I would love to chat. The program will be virtual but include 2 in person retreats in the Bat Area. Please reach out.

Partners—when and how did you know you had what it takes for partnership (vs., say, a permanent counsel position)? I’m a senior associate in lit. I really love the work and want to keep being a part of cool cases. I’m not sure I have “it,” and maybe a counsel position is a better fit. (For context, I’m a relatively recent lateral and have not had discussions about my future here yet.)

Newish equity partner here (2012 Grad) and I have some advice for associates I wish someone would have told me ten years ago. DONT TRY TO PLEASE EVERYONE. It likely won't work and you will burn out. It is much easier and safer to pick a small group to please and forsake everyone else. This comes naturally to some but it was a struggle for me.
