Had my first group interview on Zoom last Friday. What a strange and awkward experience. There were 10 of us and 1 person doing the interviews. It was traumatizing for some. Many people don't have experience interviewing, much less a group interview on camera. It's got to be the worst way to hire people that I can imagine. One guy couldn't do it and turned his camera off mid-sentence. Has anyone else been through an uncomfortable group interview? I will never partake again. Total waste of time.

Having been here since March of last year, I've found a lot to celebrate about this company - Legacy companies, particularly family-owned, family-founded ones, can sometimes suffer from a homogeneity of personality type, look, demographics, etc, but Airoom is a really diverse team that hasn't fallen into the trap of ageism, sexism, ableism, racism, etc that can plague organizations over time--and it's done intentionally, with an eye toward diversity and difference - a welcome surprise

Anyone out there at a firm with a well-supported tax group? I’m at an AM40 and am basically the sole associate for a very small group of hoarding partners, which has resulted in feast or famine for me and I feel like I’m about to lose my mind. I can’t specialize (because if I do, I lose a chunk of work) and I feel like I’m on an island. I think I’m ready for something better, and would move to seize that opportunity, but I don’t have any ideas. 4th year with LLM if helpful.

I recently joined a new firm and while everyone’s technically nice, there’s a clear “in group” on every project. Jokes I don’t get, Slack threads I’m not tagged in, impromptu coffee chats I only hear about after the fact. It’s not toxic, but it’s definitely isolating. I’m trying not to force connections or be that person who pushes too hard to fit in, but I also don’t want to stay on the outside. How do you actually build real relationships across teams like this?

I have a question to throw out this community group. What do you do when a not for profit board of directors doesn’t listen to complaints about the new CEOs behaviour, he demeans staff, called them names, shows favouritism and has created a toxic environment by pitting employees against each other. Who does the board report to and who will actually listen? These days it seems more and more organizations are becoming toxic without any accountability.

How do I know when my group is toxic/when is it time to lateral? I am so burnt out after multiple 2400 years and don’t feel like my group cares at all they’re constantly expecting more from me. Making below market and have the opportunity to make market. At one point I was told I could make partner by my group head but I’m not so sure I want it if this is the cost. I wake up every day hating my job. 4th year.

If a small specialized lit group gets poached by another firm, is it bad to join their group at the already-established firm they went to? They are building it out at the established firm and looking for associates at other firms for now, but not sure if folks have experience with that. Seems like a good way to pivot into a specialty, but worry about the risk too.

I’m expecting to be passed along to some partners of a certain group this week. However, a posting was just made for another role at the firm that may be a better fit. I’m considering reaching out to the recruiting team, mentioning I may be speaking with the partners in the other group but asking whether I can be considered for both. Cont’d in comments.

What are your thoughts about group interviews? I'm not a fan at all but for the last quarter, management has been pushing group interviews and I'm not sure what they think the benefit is. I just think that no candidate is feeling seen or heard, and also that it reduces our chances at really gauging their potential.... How do other's feel about them?

Do you ever see people go kind of unhinged in group chats or posts at work? I was in a people leaders meeting today and a few people posted how they really feel about the company in the meeting group chat, in such an unproductive way. I had to cringe at how bad they looked.
