      FIRE Financial Independence Retire Early

Curious if anyone here is working on or has achieved FIRE with young kids? I'm starting everything later in life - 3 kids under 3 at 39 years old, really only started investing in a portfolio and 401K in the last 5 years, etc. My husband is older than me by nearly 20 years and I dream of being able to retire or work less so we can actually spend some healthy years together traveling with our kids. Accomplishing FIRE while raising 3 kids seems impossible. Would love to hear some success stories!

How can I be on my way to FIRE? I’m 25 and my partner is 26, together we have a $230k NW not including our home. It still feels so far away and jobs do not feel secure. Currently make $171k combined pre-tax, and our side hustles make us about $36k+ annually, but it still feels like it’s going to be so hard to cross $1m. What age did you start FIRE and what did you do to reach it? We still want to travel and eat out from time to time and enjoy life, but also retire or be work optional by our 30s.

What does FIRE mean to you? Is it saving until you hit a number or a series of decisions about how you actually want to live? At 700k HHI, we’ve been saving and investing aggressively for ~10 years. Early on it felt simple. Save, invest, get to the number. In mid 30s w kids it feels less like math and more about decisions that are hard to unwind. Lifestyle, time vs income, when you’re actually safe enough to change things. Curious if others feel the same or if it still feels straightforward.

I recently learned about FIRE and am looking for some advice from people more experienced than me. I’m hoping to understand when I can quit my job and become a stay at home mom and homeschool the kids, without risking retirement, kids college savings, current lifestyle, and more. So.. a little different from FIRE but in a similar vein as coast FIRE or at least FU fund since my husband will keep working. How would you go about this? Sharing our numbers below for help. I have tried to run the numb

Anyone else here not have a fire number and is sort of just plugging along? I’m at the beginning of my career, have kids, and expect to have more. It feels next to impossible to predict salary and spending any meaningful distance into the future. We’re currently investing 25% and plan to increase that percentage with every raise. I love the principles of FIRE, but it’s hard to have a goal number when spending is so uncertain. Curious to hear others’ perspectives.

Early 50s and very close to pulling the FIRE plug. The numbers work out, but there is still hesitation. The primary reasons for the hesitation are: 1. Walking away in the moat lucrative years of my career 2. Having to put an upper limit on my spending that in hindsight I regret 3. Giving up on career ambitions At the same time, I'm just so tired of the daily grind and feel so done with the rat race. Any advice from those that FIREd and others who haven't but with wisdom to offer? TIA

Let's talk about scapegoating fire alarm engineers. In Ireland it seems to be an implied term of your contract of employment that you will issue a D2 certificate of compliance of a Fire Detection and Alarm System regardless of the state of the system. Issuing a declaration of engineer's competence and system's compliance leaves that engineer responsible for his declaration. When I raised that there was no Fire Detection in an AirBNB apartment, I was fired by Catch Security Systems ltd.

Not FIRE per se but this bowl seems to also share the same intentionality with other life priorities. Have any of you done any sort of values or mission statements that guide you/your family in life broadly? Or legacy documentation on how you’re living as a guide for future generations? We seem to lack worthy role models these days and with young kids I’m trying to figure our how best to document some reflections/wisdom to pass down although they’ll grow up in a very different world. Thoughts?

I graduated in 2023 currently living in Florida with 3.5 years of experience in aerospace. I got my engineering degree in electrical and I’m wondering if I’m screwed trying to land a job within electrical power or energy? The closest experience I really have within my degree is basic circuit board building, basic circuit design in programs like Pspice, and using a digital oscilloscope. To this day, the closest I can think of that I have experience in is reading low level c code and logic design.

The pursuit of the dream led me home. The DMV area allowed me to fulfill my dream of becoming a Physicist and Engineer, culminating in meaningful work for the US Army. More importantly, it brought me the joy of fatherhood. Recently, I realized that true success is found in peace, family, and community. It’s time to root our family in Oklahoma. I'm actively seeking to apply my expertise in Systems Engineering, QA, and Project Integration within the OKC defense/aerospace sector. Let's connect!
