It really feels like the fiber optic network expansion in Canada has stalled. I'm guessing the budget has dried up I was laid off back in Jan 2025 and have applied for over a 100 jobs since then. It makes me wonder: Are all those job postings even real? Are companies just putting them up for free advertising, or maybe to look busy, when they don't actually have any projects going on? With 15 years of fiber optics experience and certifications from PMI and FOA, I should be getting some traction.

SMITH Optics is a luxury sporting goods and eyewear brand. They do not pay a living wage. They are doing really well even in this economy, and while we might get a great discount on their products, we would prefer enough compensation to pay for rent, food, and healthcare. Many people rely on either second job or a two-income family to get by. We really like our jobs and our teams, but SMITH Optics does not care about the struggles its employees face. It is unconscionable.

Ive been thinking a lot about how the transition from physical to digital media has meant the loss of a lot of everyday art objects, and the jobs related to making art for a commercial purpose that drew me to the industry as a teen deciding to go to design school back in the day. I really miss cd and cassette tape inserts as design objects. They were so tactile and eclectic. There really isnt a lot of opportunity for designers to make objects that are more beautiful than practical these days.

I spent 5 years learning different trades. Carpentry, electrical, hvac, all kinds of handyman work, and my newest trade is fiber optics. I nearly mastered carpentry but I fell in love with being a lineman in fiber optics. I left my last job due to travel issues. Now nobody wants to hire me all because I don’t have the correct amount of experience. How do you get experience if no one gives you a starting chance? I don’t need training. I can lead. I’m dependable. I just don’t understand.

      Job Hunting in Tech

      Mechanical Engineer
      10mo

Curious for other people's thoughts on this. Currently employed at the job I got coming out of college, been here for over a year. When hired my position involved laser diagnostics (which is what I had internship experience in). After a little while, certain projects got shelved and I've gotten turned into doing Mechanical Design Engineering (mostly drawings). I never do optical stuff now. How long should I wait to see if I get to do different work before I just need to switch jobs?

      Salary Negotiations

      Ophthalmic Technician
      3w

Ophthalmic technician, Hudson Valley Eye Surgeons Fishkill, NY. 20+ years experience, no license. Woefully underpaid- less than $25/hour I am mortified to admit. The retinologist I work with typically schedules 50 patients between 8am & 2:30pm. With a 3 tech team it is tough, but doable. For several months it’s been just me and one other technician. Please help me negotiate compensation that reflects my value as well as a bonus for grinding through this especially grueling last quarter.

Anyone have a velamentous cord insertion? Found out I have one at my 20 week ultrasound, and MFM dr said it means the umbilical cord is attached at the side of the placenta, but didn’t mention exposed blood vessels which I’m reading about after googling. I was already being closely monitored bc of IVF and age so no changes there. I’m a little worried! Dr mentioned potential growth restriction as the pregnancy goes on (growth is good now) but otherwise didn’t seem super concerned?

For 12 years, I coached football at the highest level — Penn State, Rutgers, Vanderbilt. Then I traded in the headset for a hard hat and built a new reputation in the telecom world — managing multimillion-dollar fiber optic projects for FirstEnergy, Zayo, PSEG, and more. From DWDM circuit testing to ADSS builds and OPGW installs, I’ve been in the trenches with engineers, utility partners, and C-level execs across the infrastructure space.
