Honest question for marketing pros: Are we hiring for knowledge or for skill? Seeing a huge gap in interviews lately. Resumes are loaded with certs, but candidates falter on real-world strategy problems. We’re calling it the "Proof Gap" — the chasm between theory and the actual ability to execute. It’s making hiring a nightmare. I shared my thoughts on how to fix this and would love to hear if others are seeing the same challenge in the hiring trenches. 🔗 Read more on SEOSiri

I’ve spent the last six years as a prosecutor and I’m ready to make the jump to white-collar defense in the private sector. While I’ve tried dozens of cases, I’ve never had to sell my services to a client or worry about realization rates. I’m worried that firms will see me as a one-trick pony who only knows how to talk to a jury. How do I convince a hiring partner that my courtroom experience is an asset to their corporate clients who want to avoid trial at all costs?

The company claimed I had to complete two tests to get a report before I could even be considered for an interview. The first part was a long form to fill out, which I saw as just an obedience test. But when I got to the second part, I realized something was wrong. It was called a "data analysis" test, but what they really wanted me to do was pay someone money and get a 30% rebate. I immediately stopped when they asked me to pay 1,000 yuan.

I've been asked to come up with a program to equip leaders with more evidence-based strategies for reframing uncertainty as an opportunity for learning, innovation, and growth. I am so excited to start putting it together, but would love some ideas from people who have already worked on something like this. Brownie points for anyone who would like to share what worked well and what didn't stick!

Are genuine human efforts now being mistaken for AI? I recently moved to the second stage of a tech role I applied for, which included an English proficiency test. After submitting my answers, I was told the responses appeared to be generated by AI, even though I wrote everything myself. In a hiring process that values authenticity, how does someone prove their work is genuinely their own?

I’ve had interviews where I’m asked to describe a time I failed as a leader. Fair enough. But in finance, failure isn’t exactly encouraged. Most of us are trained to avoid mistakes, especially when they affect real dollars. I struggle with how to answer without sounding reckless or incompetent. How do you tell an honest failure story that still shows you’re someone who learns and leads well?

I’m being asked to provide proof of work for a role that already saw my 10-year GitHub history and a live coding session. They now want me to do a proctored exam to ensure I didn't use AI during the previous rounds, which feels like being treated like a middle schooler. If you don't trust my output or my history, why are we even talking?

How can you provide evidence when you are in a supporting role and don't measure the benefit you provide other than doing a great job and getting souvenirs and an occasional Shout Out during a team meeting? How do you quantify soft skills or tasks that aren't being tracked and how do you present the impact of your contributions without data?

There’s always that moment when you realize your skills are in high demand maybe it’s multiple recruiters reaching out or offers coming in fast. Proving it in negotiations often means showing concrete results, recent projects, or competing offers. When did you first feel your market value had really jumped, and how did you leverage it?

My current job does not allow me to grow as I wish. I’ve noticed most job descriptions ask for proven experience, which basically means “show us you’ve already done this". But growth comes from doing new things? How do I convince others (and myself) that I am ready for something I haven’t fully done before?
